Target: Michael Kyle Briggs, ED of the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission

Goal: Hold accountable those responsible for the horrific act of setting an opossum on fire and ensure they receive the appropriate felony charges.

The recent circulation of a disturbing video depicting an opossum being set on fire has horrified the community of Charlotte, North Carolina. This shocking incident, uploaded by the unknown perpetrators themselves, demonstrates a blatant disregard for animal life and well-being, prompting widespread outrage and calls for justice. Authorities from multiple agencies—including the FBI—are now involved in the investigation, which may lead to felony charges under both state and federal animal protection laws.

Witnesses to the video describe the perpetrator pouring a flammable liquid over the animal before igniting it. Experts emphasize that such actions not only cause immense suffering to individual animals but also pose a broader impact on societal safety, as studies have shown a concerning link between animal cruelty and violent behavior towards humans. The opossum, an integral part of the ecosystem, provides crucial ecological benefits and poses minimal threats to humans, underscoring the senselessness of this act.

This egregious act of animal cruelty demands immediate and appropriate punishment that reflects the severity of the actions taken against this helpless creature. An effective response must be initiated to convey that such barbaric treatment of animals will not be tolerated and to potentially deter similar acts in the future. By finding and holding accountable those responsible, the state can take a significant step toward safeguarding vulnerable wildlife and upholding the principles of ethical treatment and compassion.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. McDonald,

The recent incident involving an opossum being set on fire in Charlotte, NC, has sparked outrage and concern among animal advocates and the public alike. A video of the incident uploaded by the perpetrators, displays a horrifying scene in which a person is seen dousing the opossum with a flammable liquid before igniting it. Such acts of cruelty not only inflict unimaginable pain and suffering on the animal but raise alarm regarding the potential for further violence in our communities.

As investigations by local law enforcement continue, it is crucial that those responsible for this heinous act are held accountable for their actions and face appropriate felony charges under both state and federal laws. The fact that there is a documented correlation between animal cruelty and violent crimes against humans supports the argument for serious repercussions. Experts have warned that individuals willing to inflict harm on vulnerable creatures could likely pose risks to human safety as well.

We urge your office to prioritize this case and ensure that justice is served for the opossum that suffered and for the integrity of animal welfare. It is vital to convey a clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. The community is watching, and it is imperative that those involved in this gruesome incident are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Sincerely,

What a horrible human! To burn alive another living being! Lock him up and throw away the key! That is extreme pain forced upon another, can you imagine? And possums are so nice! I live in the country and see them all the time! You know they eat up to 5,000 ticks a year! Thats one possum, and when they are scarred, they play dead, or they turn around and run away. They eat all kinds of bugs and dead things, and they are so cute. They won’t bother you. How someone can do this is so cruel. I pray that they lock them up for the max for extreme cruelty, no one has the right to do that, possums don’t hurt anyone,or your property. Thats one sick human, lock them up for good.

  2. I saw a part of the video and it is ATROCIOUS! The possum was terrified. These are the lowest, most evil creatures of the planet. They are psychopaths and are demonic in every sense of the word. I urge law enforcement to charge them to the fullest extent of the law and to prioritize this case of extreme animal cruelty. A clear decisive message MUST BE SENT!

  3. We can blame these lax judges who continue to give these insane lunatics a slap on the wrist. I hope people find out who did this and put these bastards out of their misery and give them the same torture they gave to this innocent baby.

  5. I signed something else for this poor opossum today and I was livid. Such blatant sadistic violence should never be considered acceptable and I would definitely have a few (a lot) words for that crappy judge who would not be so ignorant if the victim had been a person.

  6. I swear to God, All animal abusers should be euthanized!!! Poor opossum…
