Stop Animal Abusers From Controling Domestic Violence Victims

Target: Josh Shapiro, Governor of Pennsylvania

Goal: Enact strict penalties for those reportedly abusing pets to control domestic violence victims.

Domestic violence and animal abuse are inextricably linked, with numerous victims experiencing horrific acts of cruelty against their beloved pets as a means of manipulation and intimidation. Advocates at Crisis Center North have shared heart-wrenching anecdotes of animals subjected to dreadful treatment, including cases where dogs were reportedly harmed to instill fear in their owners. The passage of House Bill 1210 seeks to address this alarming issue by extending protection from abuse orders to companion animals, thereby empowering victims and providing them with temporary ownership rights. Yet, without appropriate legal consequences for abusers, this legislation alone will not be enough to discourage the systemic violence that victims and their pets face daily.

Sources indicate that the Crisis Center North has successfully aided numerous victims, allowing over 500 animals to escape dangerous situations and providing emergency shelter for over 415 nights to pets in need. However, many victims arrive at the center with their pets suffering from injuries or neglect, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current penalties for those perpetrating such acts of animal cruelty. It is crucial to recognize that animals often serve as emotional support for victims, and their well-being is essential to the healing process. Thus, the demand for legislative change is not only timely but necessary to ensure that those who inflict harm on animals as a means to control their human victims face severe repercussions for their actions.

This petition advocates for the enactment of stringent legal consequences that would deter potential abusers from exploiting the bond between pets and their owners. It is vital that lawmakers recognize the connection between animal welfare and domestic violence, ensuring that animals are treated as more than mere property under the law. By introducing strict penalties for reported animal abuse, the state can send a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated, ultimately protecting both victims and their furry companions.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Shapiro,

The intersection of domestic violence and animal abuse presents a significant challenge in our society, with numerous victims suffering horrific acts of cruelty against their pets at the hands of their abusers. Advocates from Crisis Center North have shared alarming stories, detailing how some dogs have allegedly had their legs broken as a mechanism of control over their human counterparts. This tragic reality not only impacts the animals involved but adds to the psychological burden on victims seeking refuge from violence.

As the state Senate has recently passed House Bill 1210 to include companion animals in protection from abuse orders, it is crucial to ensure that these legislative efforts are supported by stringent penalties for those perpetrating animal abuse. Survivors of domestic violence rely heavily on their pets for emotional support, and those who exploit this bond must face severe legal consequences. The current lack of accountability reportedly emboldens abusers, perpetuating a cycle of fear and control that must be broken to protect both victims and their animal companions.

Therefore, we respectfully urge you to take action by enacting strict penalties for those reportedly abusing pets to control their owners. By doing so, the state can demonstrate its commitment to ending animal cruelty and prioritizing the safety of domestic violence survivors and their beloved pets. The time for change is now, and it is vital that our laws reflect a commitment to protecting all members of our community, including those without a voice.

Sincerely,
