Goal: Stop rewarding abusive roadside zoos for confining wild animals.
Roadside zoos are disgusting institutions that capitalize on the suffering of sentient wild animals. Animals ranging from tigers and bears to lemurs and monkeys are kept in small, filthy cages that encompass a mere percentage of what their natural habitats in the wild would be. Often, these animals are kept alone, entirely isolated from the rest of their kin and denied access to mental stimulation and social inclinations. They are fed inadequate food, given dirty water, and receive little to no veterinary care, even when they are sick or injured.
Still, roadside zoos are somehow legal—and even encouraged—in much of the United States. Early in July of 2022, for example, North Carolina passed a bill that would exempt certain roadside zoo owners from having to pay sales tax on items for the zoo. This bill covers items used in the housing, raising, and feeding of animals for public display, in essence subsidizing the cruel confinement of these wild creatures.

Dear Governor Cooper,
Animals in roadside zoos endure extreme physical and psychological suffering. Tigers, monkeys, bears, and others are often stolen from their natural habitats and thrown in barren cages that are much too small. They are often kept alone, isolated from their friends and kin, and are fed inadequate food and water. Even so, North Carolina just signed a bill that would exempt certain roadside zoo owners from having to pay a sales tax on all required housing, raising, and feeding items, essentially subsidizing the cruel confinement of wildlife.
We are asking you, Mr. Cooper, to stop incentivizing abusive roadside zoos and, instead, focus legislative efforts on animal conservation.

Sounds like North Carolina is subsidizing animal abuse, what a great way to waste tax payer money. These dreadful nasty roadside zoos are infamous for extreme neglect and abuse and to encourage that is immoral and depraved. Is that what you want to say about your state, that you want animals to be abused and exploited? It’s 2022, not 1810 and you need to step up for voiceless animals and not contribute to their abuse and misery.

Roadside zoos are dirty and the animals suffer neglect. They should be banned!!!!
I cannot believe a bill like this was passed. What the hell is wrong with people? Who are the stupid ignorant people paying to enter these places. Americans clean up your own back yard before calling other countries out for their animal abuse. It’s all so wrong the world over.

There has got to be laws put in place to protect all animals.

All animals are meant to be free…humans are but ONE on a very huge list of mammals worldwide. AND we are the only ones who are entirely trashing the only planet we have to live on. It is not too late for us to step up and start behaving like the decent humans we were always meant to be!! Not too late, but we WILL run out of time if we don’t get at it!
It should be Criminal in fact a criminal charge it should be capital punishment in my opinion to cause such animal abuse. It is heinous and reprehensible for these animals to be treated as money making machines for these corrupt individuals and anyone who participates in this is equally guilty.
These disgusting, horrendous, reprehensible roadside zoos should be banned everywhere, and the animals in them should be sent to animal sanctuaries, where they will be fed well, cared for properly, and able to live among others of their own species.

North Carolina, am not surprised. People dont care about animals if they allow this to happen. What kind of governor would allow that. An evil one, thats who. Dont vacation in NC so they cannot use tourist money to abuse animals. Just sickening how many evil people there are in the world.
