Stop Torturing Circus Animals With Whips, Electric Prods, and Sharp Metal Hooks

Target: Chuck Schumer, Majority Leader of the United States Senate

Goal: Stop torturing animals for our entertainment and demand a ban on the use of exotic and wild animals in traveling circuses.

Don’t be fooled by the go-lucky attitude of circus entertainment. While it might look to be all fun and games—with animals jumping through hoops and standing on their heads—wild animals do not do these tricks of their own volition. They do them because they are afraid of what will happen if they don’t.

Elephants, bears, tigers, and other circus animals are subjected to extreme mental and physical duress throughout the training process. Animals are coerced into performing by being repeatedly beaten with whips, electric prods, and bullhooks—a stout pole with a sharp hook at one end. These wild animals are forced to travel, sometimes year round, with minimal access to veterinary care or other basic necessities. Elephants are shackled in chains, and big cats are shoved in cramped, filthy cages.

The Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act has recently been reintroduced to Congress. If passed, this act will prohibit the use of exotic and wild animals in traveling circuses and save thousands of elephants, tigers, lions, and tigers from abuse. Demand an end to this routine cruelty and encourage legislators to support the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Schumer,

Elephants, bears, tigers, and other animals used in circuses suffer severe physical and psychological abuse. These animals are beaten with electric prods and sharp hooks in order to force them to perform unnatural tricks for human entertainment. When not performing, these wild animals are shackled in chains and shoved in small, filthy cages where they eat, sleep, and defecate.

There is, however, hope for circus animals. Although there is currently little int the way of legal protections for these animals—the government currently doesn’t even monitor training sessions for abuse—the recent reintroduction of the traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act brings with it the promise of an end to the suffering. If passed, this act will prohibit the use of exotic and wild animals in traveling circuses, carnivals, or parades.

We are asking you, Senator Schumer, to support this legislation and help bring an end to this cruel and unusual practice.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  3. Shirley Lemieux says:

I support this petition for the fact that Circuses do not need animals to be used for entertainment. Circuses have many other ways to entertain their audiences.

  4. Kathy Bossart says:

I THOUGHT THESE CIRCUSES WERE PRETTY MUCH OUT DATED, I GUESS I WAS WRONG. WHY IN THE HELL WOULD ANY ONE PATRONIZE A CIRCUS, WE HAVE ZOO’S THAT TAKE CARE OF ANIMALS AND OUR COMMITTED TO THEM AND NOT LETTING THEM BECOME EXTINCT. I NEVER PATRONIZED A CIRCUS OF ANY KIND, EVEN WHEN I WAS YOUNG, I HATED THEM, CAUSE I SAW SOMEONE HITTING AN ANIMAL IT WAS APPAULING, AND MY BROTHER SAID A FEW CHOICE WORDS TO HIM, WHICH HE IGNORED. WHAT AN ATTROSITY AND UGLY PERSON HE WAS ON THE INSIDE AS WELL AS OUTSIDE. I NEVER FORGOT THAT. I WAS SO UPSET. WHAT AN ASSHOLE HE WAS.STOP THESE CIRCUSES ONCE AND FOR ALL.

  5. I won’t support circuses, rodeos, bullfighting, horse-drawn carriages, or zoos! Animals deserve to live free- not be abused or tortured!!

  6. All these TRAINERS SHOULD BE THE ONES TO EXPERIENCE HOW PAINFUL THEIR CRUEL AND ABUSIVE INSTRUMENTS ARE FIRSTHAND!!! STOP ALL ANIMAL CRUELTY IMMEDIATELY BY NOT HAVING ANY LIVE ANIMALS PERFORMING IMMEDIATELY!!!!

  7. Michelle Stewart says:

Circuses and traveling road side zoos must be made illegal all over the world.

  8. Most definitely the use of animals in road side productions as well as many other venues needs to be stopped.

  9. Julia Edinger says:

SHUT DOWN CIRCUS ,,,,NOW!!! Very cruel treatment to precious lions, tigers , elephants !!!

  10. MICHAEL BAVARO says:

    THIS IS ANIMAL CRUELTY.

  11. American Girl says:

To Not Ban & Put an End to this Disgustingly Cruel Practice, Would be a Morally & Ethically Bankrupt Decision On Your Part! Kindly Do the Right Thing & Shut this Down Immediately!

  12. This all stems from many years ago when travelling shows used animals for entertainment and monetary gain.
The so-named ‘Dancing Bear’ was a prime example.
When acquired, these unfortunate animals were trained to supposedly dance.
    The method was as follows:-

The bear would be forced into a large metal cauldron in a way that it could only stand on it’s rear feet.
Around the sides and under, a fire would be lit until it was unbearable, (probably where the word originated from) whereby the tortured animal would have to keep hopping from one foot (or leg) to the other to stop it’s feet getting severely burnt!
If it tried to escape the cauldron it would be relentlessly clubbed back down!

After many tortuous episodes of this nature, music would be played and the fire stemmed so that eventually, the bear would start to realise that if he picked his feet up and down when the music played, the torture stopped. Then when on display, the bear would recognise the music or sound, and would hop from one foot to the other knowing this kept him safe from severely burnt feet!!

So, another so-called ‘dancing bear’ produced by torture for the pleasure of the unknowing public. Then prodded back to it’s cage ( prison) until the next time!
This just one instance and believe me it still goes on in these modern times.

I could relate to other barbaric training sessions of other captive animals but if you want to find out more, just google Circus animal training methods.

Totally outdated and unnecessary. Travelling circus animals should be banned.
If people would boycott these few remaining Circus shows it would have to come to an end.
Apart from domesticated horses no WILD animals should be used for public entertainment!
They are NOT meant to perform stupid tricks. How do you think that a great elephant is made to stand( balance) on it’s front legs whilst it’s back legs in the air?
Well maybe you really do not want to know!!
