A baby koala orphaned by the catastrophic floods in New South Wales has finally been released into the wild after a several month long rehabilitation period. When the 14-month old koala was found amid torrential downpours, he was walking on the ground alone, crying out for his mother who could sadly not be located. Cases like this are not uncommon. New South Wales is experiencing the worst flooding in seven decades, due to extreme weather changes courtesy of climate change. And things are only going to get worse.
The catastrophic flooding in New South Wales and Queensland has had an immense impact on people, communities, and wildlife. Floods have further threatened many species and ecosystems that were just starting to recover from Australia’s Black Summer bushfires two years earlier. Now, these animals will have to fight their way from the brink of extinction yet again.
Flooding is the new reality for communities all over the world—both who use and do not use fossil fuels. Demand the U.S. decrease their reliance on fossil fuels and transition towards more sustainable sources of energy in an effort to conserve our planet and the species who live here.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear President Biden,
After a year of record-breaking wildfires and drought, which killed an estimated 3 billion animals, Australia is facing yet another environmental catastrophe. Regions such as New South Wales and Queensland are currently experiencing the worst flooding in over seven decades, all thanks to international climate changes. Flooding is affecting not only people and communities, but is decimating populations of already endangered wildlife.
These floods affect millions of animals, leaving them homeless, injured, and orphaned. Recently, an orphaned baby koala was released into the wild after a several month long rehabilitation period. Veterinarians in New South Wales stumbled upon this baby in the midst of severe downpours, alone on the ground, crying out to his mother from whom he was separated. The baby koala was lucky rescuers found him in time, but many others are not.
We are asking you, Mr. Biden, to please make legislative changes to help the U.S. transition to a cleaner economy and protect endangered animals from the consequences of carbon emissions.
