Goal: Raise the minimum number of days a U.S. shelter must house a dog or cat before euthanizing them.
Many people fail to recognize the prevalence of kill-shelters throughout the United States. The antiquated practice of murdering innocent dogs and cats in the name of population control results in the deaths of nearly one million pets in the U.S. each year. Sometimes, the methods of euthanasia employed are extremely unpleasant or even painful for the animals. Gas chambers–tiny metal boxes that get filled with dogs and cats and pumped with toxic gasses–for example, are still legal in states across the U.S and cause their victims mental and physical duress.
To make matters worse, over thirty states have laws outlining a “holding period” for kill-shelters. According to this legislation, shelters are currently only required to house a dog or cat for a period of 5-7 days before euthanizing them. Sometimes, however, animals are euthanized in a mere 48 or 72 hours. In the majority of cases, these companion animals are very friendly and healthy, extremely adoptable candidates. Sometimes, the dogs and cats killed are people’s pets that got lost and taken in by overcrowded shelters, never to be returned again.
Killing as many dogs and cats in the shortest amount of time is not the solution to overpopulation. We must make spaying and neutering more affordable to the masses, educate people on the effects of releasing their animals, and better promote adoption and adoptable pets. Sign this petition to encourage legislation to raise the holding period for dogs and cats at kill-shelters across the U.S. and to give these innocent animals a chance at finding a forever home.

Dear President Biden,
The United States is currently in the midst of an extreme pet overpopulation epidemic. Dogs and cats are ending up in shelters by the millions and are being senselessly murdered because of overcrowding. Kill-shelters, which are still largely common throughout the U.S., euthanize nearly one million dogs and cats each year, sometimes employing cruel methods such as gassing.
Animals at these shelters are not given much time to find new homes. In over thirty states, laws establish the required “holding period” for any given pet in a kill-shelter need not exceed 5-7 days. In some cases, dogs and cats receive only 48-72 hours before being destroyed. These animals are almost always highly adoptable candidates, with picture perfect health and temperament. Often, animals that are killed were people’s pets that had gotten lost and turned in. If these animals were given a little more time, maybe these owners could have reunited with their pets.
These animals deserve a better chance at finding a forever home. We are asking you, President Biden, to please increase the minimum period of time kill-shelters are required to hold their animals. Seven days are not enough.

I agree, 5 days is nowhere near long enough to rehome a dog.
If all pet parents were responsible by having their pets neutered & spayed there would not be an over population in the shelters in the first place! Also realizing that adopting an animal is a lifetime (their lifetime) commitment not just a cute puppy or kitten weekend jaunt until we tire of this furry life.

Potential adopters can’t always go to shelters in that short amount of time to find their perfect pet. This time limit is not long enough.

This petition should rather be asking for Biden and Co. to introduce compulsory spaying/neutering laws for all female and male cats and dogs in domestic homes. Breeders must register and prove the purpose of each breeding queen and stud, each year, and pay an annual fee for that privilege. These regulations will need to be supported by more admin staff and law enforcement officers… which increases national employment rates. Win-win all the way! But… it’s never that simple… 🙁
Breeding shouldn’t even exist. Those bred animals decrease the number of homes available for the others. AND, many purebreds ALSO end up in the same places. Breeding is selfish, illogical and cruel in context.

Seems strange having to sign a Petition about an issue that should not exist in the first place but here we are having to do so. There are lives that matter here on Earth other than just Human life. Humans that created an overpopulation of Pets in Shelters in the first place. So the human narrow minded political solution is to kill cats and dogs housed in these Animal Shelters after a ridiculous amount of just 5 days. What a pathetic solution in a lazy Mans World. Let’s be clear. It’s murder, not ‘euthanization.’ That term has been twisted and co-opted for decades in the kill ‘shelter’ world. But this is neither an “easy” nor “merciful” death. It’s the opposite. “Sanitizing the streets” of millions of homeless animals is done so people can avoid facing up to what THEY’VE wrongly created. Whoever can’t see this truth is a fool.
And now it’s come full circle. They’re also “providing” the same “easy out” to HUMANS across the world, including children in many places, and for any ‘condition'(excuse) …rather than working harder on the help and care they really need. (look up your local human ‘euthanasia’ laws; only some countries are wisely opposing them) See the parallels in the concept and details. It’s being glorified as a “good” thing, “easy,” “merciful,” “inclusive.” All lies. The truth is, to this evil, all life is worthless, and DISPOSABLE.
Please increase the number of hold days that an animal must stay in a shelter (before being euthanized), to give it a fighting chance of finding a new home. Killing animals after only a couple of days is simply not fair to the animal.

One of my cats went missing for 10 days, fortunately she was found and got home safe, some of these poor souls could be someone’s beloved pet but they wouldn’t have the opportunity to be reunited because obviously their lives have so little value, to euthanise healthy loved animals for no other reason other than they are a number is absolutely disgusting and heartless, these are somebody’s babies, just give them the chance they deserve
