Praise Ban on Fur Sales

Target: Tamara White, West Hollywood spokeswoman

Goal: Thank the city of West Hollywood, CA for upholding its decision to ban the sale of fur

Two years ago West Hollywood, California city council voted unanimously to place a ban on the sale of fur apparel. Following months of contest, the ban has finally gone into effect, making West Hollywood the first city to implement a mandated prohibition on the sale of fur. This is landmark legislation and deserves our praise.

The ordinance makes it a misdemeanor to sell or distribute any fur product made to be work, including coats, hats, gloves, and shoes. Unfortunately, it does not apply to furniture.  Violations will result in fines and three violations will result in misdemeanor charges.

Perhaps what makes this ban so significant isn’t only that it is the first of its kind, but that West Hollywood has earned a reputation as one of the world’s fashion capitals. The unanimous vote in support of the ban is largely an attempt to change this image and promote a cruelty-free environment.

The fur ban isn’t the first of West Hollywood’s groundbreaking pieces of animal rights legislation. In 2003 it became the first city in the U.S. to outlaw the declawing of cats and has since banned testing cosmetics on animals. “We’ve consistently worked to enact cutting-edge animal welfare legislation,” says West Hollywood spokeswoman Tamara White. “This is in line with our values.”

More than 50 million animals are killed for their pelts each year in the United States. Mink production alone accounts for roughly 3 million. Not only is this ban a landmark, the influence it could have on the fur market due to West Hollywood’s connections to the fashion industry could be significant. Please take a moment to sign the petition below and thank them for their continued effort to keep animals protected from unnecessary harm and cruelty.

Dear Tamara White,

After two years the fur ban in West Hollywood has finally gone into effect. The selling of fur apparel in one of the world’s fashion capitals will now result in fines or even misdemeanor charges, hopefully initiating a positive change in the minds of consumers and within the fashion industry.

West Hollywood continues to prove that it is a friend to animals, passing a third piece of landmark legislation in that last 10 years. Thank you so much for doing your part to protect animals from such a horrible and unnecessary fate.
