Target: New Zealand government
Goal: Ban the testing of all products on animals.
New Zealand recently updated its Animal Welfare Amendment bill to say that animals are to be considered sentient beings. Prior to this, animals were often referred to as objects or things in the legal world.
Because animals are now considered sentient beings legally, animal welfare advocates are hoping that this will mean more severe and quicker punishment for animal abusers and more transparency.
New Zealand had previously banned testing of cosmetics on animals. However, animal testing has not been banned for all products.
Urge New Zealand authorities to extend its Animal Welfare Amendment Bill to stop all animal testing.
Dear New Zealand lawmakers,
Your recent updates to the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill recognizing animals as sentient beings made great strides toward animal welfare.
Your previous ban on testing cosmetics on animals is also commendable. However, animal testing is still allowed for other products. When it comes to animal welfare, what difference does it make which product is being tested on the animal? The animal feels pain and experiences stress regardless of the product that is being tested on it.
We the undersigned urge you to continue making positive strides in animal welfare and ban all testing on animals in New Zealand.
