Stop State-Sanctioned Animal Cruelty

Target: Marie-Claude Bibeau, Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Canada

Goal: Stop supporting the abuse, neglect, and inhumane torture of Canadian farm animals.

Millions of farm animals die or are pointlessly euthanized, live in wire cages, wallow in their own feces, or are fattened until they can no longer walk. They suffer horrific treatment at the hands of farmers, truckers, auctioneers, feedlot operators, and meat processors, and this horrifying abuse is sanctioned by the Canadian government. Farm animals are intentionally excluded from every provincial legislation governing animal protection, and no federal laws exist regulating their humane treatment. This is unacceptable and must change.

The NFACC (National Farm Animal Care Council) Codes of Practice offer guidelines for handling and caring for farm animals, but adherence is voluntary. These guidelines are developed for the industries they serve and are not made in the best interests of the animals. Smashing an animal’s head against the floor as a method of euthanasia is horrific animal abuse, yet this inhumane behavior is acceptable according to the NFACC.

Through ignorance and inaction, the Canadian government has stood idly by as hundreds of millions of animals succumb to an abusive and deadly fate year after year. Demand that the government implement federally regulated farm animal laws that respect the livestock and not the industry.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Honourable Bibeau,

I am horrified that the Canadian government, at both a federal and provincial level, intentionally ignores the treatment of farm animals in the agriculture industry. Federal laws do not exist for their protection, and provincial legislation excludes them from receiving care provided to other animals.

Guidelines laid down by the NFACC (National Farm Animal Care Council) are admirable in many respects, but adherence is largely voluntary and it permits practices that benefit the industries and not the animal. Thumping piglets, or battering their head against a hard surface is a disturbing method of euthanasia that is approved for use on livestock, but is criminal against other animals.

Farm animals are locked in small metal cages for breeding and meat production, yet puppy mills are illegal. Livestock die of frostbite and heat exposure while being transported across the country; meanwhile, a pet cannot be left in the car while shopping. A sheep’s tail can be cut off, but tail docking a dog is questioned by veterinarian associations.

This double standard is unacceptable. Farm animals deserve the right to live a life free from distress and abuse. This negligence results in the inhumane treatment of hundreds of millions of farm animals every year. The Canadian government, and the department of agriculture in particular, need to take action to ensure farm animals across the country receive fair and ethical treatment.

I urge you to federally implement humane treatment laws that benefit farm animals and not the industries they die for.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  1. Sadly, the lack of animal abuse laws for farmed animals is not only in Canada but in every country. People have treated animals like used toilet paper forever! You would think that humans would have evolved enough to have some empathy and compassion for the creatures that sustain their lives. But instead, they just see themselves as being above other animals and masters of all. We people who DO care about other animals need to keep making noise about the horrible ways in which farmed animals, and all animals, are abused. Thank you, “Animal Petitions” for getting the word out and giving us a chance to add our names to your fight for animal rights.

  2. All animal abusers internationally must have the death penalty performed on them!

  3. Canada’s track record on animal protection is abysmal whether it be domestic pets, farm animals or wildlife generally. The fact that other North American countries are equally backward is not a justification for such lack of concern and empathy.

  4. Jaime Perez says:

Animal abusers should be shot at dawn! This world has no compassion for innocent animals. We are their voice and we must be heard-to protect the animals. They don’t deserve the ugly lives they are forced to live.

  5. Please stop this HORRIFIC CRUELTY!!!!

  6. Why does Canada despise their farm animals even to go so far as to run over and kill a woman trying to help pigs. DISGUSTING😡

  7. Shame shame on Canada 🇨🇦
