Stop Torturing and Mutilating Lambs for Profit and Fashion

Target: David Littleproud, Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, Australia

Goal: Ban the disgusting practice of cutting off a lamb’s skin in an operation called mulesing.

Sheep raised for wool often undergo horrific maiming called mulesing. When a lamb is six to ten weeks old, he or she will be held down and pieces of skin around on the rump are cut off of their bodies. Or they will have clamps fastened on to their skin until it atrophies and falls off. These mutilating operations are performed without anesthesia, and the sheep are rarely given pain killers.

This abhorrent practice is disgusting and needs to stop.

Following the procedure, lambs will stand in a hunched position, and they lose weight, socialize less, and spend less time lying down and feeding. These are a sheep’s expressions of pain, and they will persist for 5 to 7 weeks until the wound has fully healed.

This wound produces a large scar tissue that is less likely to attract flies and maggots. Yet, mulesing is not completely effective, and many sheep that have been tortured in this way still succumb to flystrike. These animals should be raised with better management and in more natural conditions to eliminate the need to horrifically maim them.

Every year, nearly 20 million lambs are tortured in this way. This is a disgusting treatment of animals for human profit and fashion and must be stopped immediately.

Sign this petition to urge the government to stop mulesing on sheep farms.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Honourable Littleproud,

Mulesing is criticized by many people, and several countries have banned or denounced its use. It is disgraceful that Australia still allows this practice.

Mulesing is performed on lambs when they are six to ten weeks old to create scar tissue that is supposed to protect them from flystrike, but this method us ineffective and should instead be managed by improved farm management. This painful operation is done without anesthesia or pain reducing medication, and causes long term trauma for the sheep as indicated by their hunched stance, weight loss, reduced socializing, and loss of appetite.

Skin from a lamb’s breech and tail is either cut off their bodies or is clamped until it atrophies and dies. This is commonplace with merino sheep as they are bred to produce more wool than their bodies can naturally handle. Millions of lambs each year are subjected to this torture for human profit and fashion.

I urge you to show leadership and compassion and stop mulesing in your country.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
