Share Conservation Funds With Crucial Overlooked Species

Target: Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment

Goal: Demand redistribution of conservation funds to protect threatened species.

The European Union is preparing a massive expansion of funding to combat climate change-related extinctions, with the LIFE Programme’s budget set to balloon to €20 billion ($24 billion). However, a recent report on conservation spending indicates that the vast majority of that amount will go to vertebrates such as the brown bear and grey wolf, leaving little for animals like crustaceans and spiders in danger of extinction.

While all species deserve protection from the effects of human activity, vertebrates and mammals, including birds, receive 500 times more for each species than less popular animals which are crucial to a wide range of ecosystems. If insects and other threatened species are not offered greater protection, the potential decline in biodiversity could result in extensive harm, including reduced food sources and habitats, for all species. Sign the petition below to demand that conservation efforts be granted funding based on urgency, rather than popularity.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Sinkevičius,

The revelation of massive disparities in conservation funding for vitally important species is cause for concern for environmentalists and wildlife advocates the world over. While picturesque and well-known animals like the Eurasian lynx and the grey wolf enjoy widespread sympathy and support, equally-important invertebrate species continue to skirt extinction with only a fraction of the EU’s conservation budget.

Molluscs, crustaceans, and insects are vital for the health and survivability of ecosystems throughout Europe, and they’re in dire need of funding. I demand that you review the European Commission’s conservation budget and reapportion funding on the basis of need.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
