Target: Gregg Hunt, Australian Minister for the Environment
Goal: Do not take away the option for caring citizens to give tax deductible donations to environmental groups.
The Australian government is trying to make tax deductible donations to environmental groups a thing of the past. If something is not done to stop this, these beneficial groups will soon no longer exist.
Unfortunately, protections have been lifted from various marine habitats around Australia in order to allow big oil companies to try and locate gas through seismic blast testing. Several animals are now in great danger, as marine mammals usually go deaf from the noise, beach themselves and end up dying as a result.
If this is not outrageous enough, the Australian government has decided that the issue of environmental groups receiving tax deductible donations now needs to be readdressed in parliament. If parliament decides such donations should not be tax deductible, many caring individuals will no longer be able to give money to these groups. Eventually, non-profit environmental groups won’t have enough money or resources to fight for the environment, and the country’s oceans as they are now will soon be nothing more than a memory.
Sign this petition and tell the Australian government that not allowing people to make tax deductible donations to hardworking environmental groups is wrong. If ignorant government officials feel it is OK to grant big oil companies permission to destroy protected ocean areas, the little guys who oppose such destruction should at least have a fighting chance to stop them.
Dear Minister Hunt,
The government is trying to make tax deductible donations to environmental groups a thing of the past. At the same time, big oil companies have been given permission to look for gas and oil in protected ocean areas. If tax deductible donations are no longer allowed, there will soon be no one around to help ensure that our oceans will not become one big trash dump.
Because protections have been lifted from many marine sanctuaries, several animals will or have already experienced deaths and injuries as a result of seismic blast testing. Sadly, many animals beach themselves after going deaf from loud seismic blasts and die soon afterwards. Other animals leave their habitats and travel to areas where they run into issues such as facing more predators or not being able to find substantial food sources.
In the current economy, most people have to worry about feeding themselves and their families before anything else. Not giving people a tax break for donating to environmental groups will likely make doing so unaffordable, soon making any such group a thing of the past. Unfortunately, a destroyed environment is not far behind.
For all of these reasons, I hope you will urge parliament to keep donations meant for environmental groups tax deductible. If measures are not taken now, our children will likely be left with nothing more than pictures of an environment that these groups once fought so hard to try and protect.
