Protect Loch Ness Red Squirrel from Extinction

Target: Simon Hodge, Chief Executive of the Scottish Forestry Commission

Goal: Protect the Loch Ness red squirrels from extinction by protecting their forest habitat.

In the U.K., Loch Ness red squirrels are endangered, yet the Scottish Forestry Commission is continually cutting down trees, leaving less and less room for the threatened species to live and grow. An area of the forest needs to be reserved for the squirrels in order for them to establish an enduring habitat and survive.

The Scottish Forestry Commision is supposed to be dedicated to the survival and protection of nature; however, their actions say otherwise. They have already felled three areas of forestation that the squirrels call home and seem to have no intention of stopping. In fact, they have expressed that they will be implementing further felling in the area in 20 years.

As they continue to cut, they have not yet replanted trees or planted new trees in their places, so this plan seems to have little regard for not only the environment, but the animals that call the trees home, one of which being the endangered squirrels. The Loch Ness squirrels need at least one area reserved for them–an area full of mature trees suitable for them to establish a proper, lasting habitat.

Sign this petition to demand protections for the Loch Ness red squirrels’ habitat and stop the Scottish Forestry Commission from carelessly cutting down too many of their precious trees.

Dear Chief Executive Simon Hodge,

It is a shame that the beautiful Loch Ness red squirrel is endangered and that the Scottish Forestry Commission plans to fell more forestation without taking their well being into account. Please protect this endangered species by adding reservations for the squirrels to live and grow.

The destruction of so many trees is not only harmful for the environment, but it is also not good for the development of the struggling Loch Ness squirrel population. Your commission has currently not shown any initiative in replanting the tress you have taken down, or planting new ones in their place. This is upsetting, as you stand to impede this species from recovering and staying alive.

Setting aside a reserved habitat is the least that you could do in order to preserve this species and ensure that it does not become extinct. Act now and become a champion for the environment, not its antagonist.
