Success: Endangered Whales Protected from Deadly Seismic Blasting

Target:  Chris Oliver, Assistant Administrator for Fisheries, United States

Goal: Applaud the suspension of deadly seismic blasting in the Atlantic Ocean.

The lives of thousands of endangered dolphins and whales in the Atlantic Ocean have been saved. For now. Deadly seismic blasting in the Atlantic Ocean has been suspended. This comes after countless conservationists, government officials, and activists, like those that signed this petition, have called out the practice for its damaging and fatal consequences to our ocean’s endangered species.

Seismic blasting is used to search for oil and gas beneath the ocean floor. The blasting sounds, caused by air guns, are over 60 decibels louder than that of a rocket launch. The sound carries over 2,800 kilometers across the ocean, impacting marine life from Florida to New Jersey. The sea turtles, dolphins, and whales escape the noise by venturing into unfamiliar habitats rife with predators and lacking in food and other resources.

The National Marine Fisheries Service will suspend seismic blasting through at least the rest of the year with no word on when it will restart. Sign the petition to thank the organization for suspending this deadly practice and ask that they make this ban permanent.

Dear Mr. Oliver,

After concerns from activists, conservationists, and government officials, you have finally suspended dangerous and deadly seismic blasting in the Atlantic Ocean. This move will save thousands of marine life, including endangered dolphins, whales, and sea turtles.

I thank you for taking action to suspend this practice and offer respite to our planet’s marine life. However, I ask that you make this suspension permanent to continue protecting the lives of the ocean’s most imperiled species.
