Protect Belugas from Traumatic Transport

Target: Stephen M. Coan, Ph.D., President and CEO, Mystic Aquarium

Goal: Don’t transport five beluga whales to new aquarium 400 miles away.

Five beluga whales who have called Marineland in Canada home since they were born are scheduled to board trucks or airplanes and travel over 470 miles to a new aquarium in Mystic, CT, where they will be researched by scientists. This traumatic transport may not only physically harm the endangered whales, but may also emotionally scar them.

Conservationists and animal rights groups are suing to keep the belugas in Canada. They say that separating the belugas from their social bonds with the dozens of other belugas at their home aquarium may mentally impact the whales.  In addition, transporting them is very dangerous. These groups argue that research can be done on belugas in the wild and that any transport goes against the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

These endangered belugas should not be subjected to such mental and physical threats. Demand that they remain in Marineland, in the home and with the family they know.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Coan,

The transport of five endangered belugas over 470 miles from Canada to Connecticut not only puts the species in the way of physical harm, but also mental harm. Ripping the animals away from their community and transporting them via truck or airplane will be a traumatic experience according to conservationists and animal rights groups.

Research can be done in the wild or by traveling to meet the belugas, not by uprooting them. I ask that you abandon plans to transport these belugas across the US-Canadian border.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  8. If they are to be transported anywhere, it should be to a sanctuary with all the other belugas (and captive animals) in marine land.

Animals are not here for our entertainment or research. Let them live their own lives.
