Stop Sale of Endangered Shark Species as Meat

Target: Sussan Ley, Minister for the Environment of Australia

Goal: Protect the endangered school shark by stopping the sale of its meat on the market.

Australia’s school shark population is in serious decline, with the species recently being placed on the critically endangered list. The shark’s meat is sold as “flake” in seafood markets despite the decline, leading environmental groups to criticize the government for its weak protection of the species.

Australia’s national laws contain an unfortunate loophole that prioritizes the economy over the environment, leading to these lax protections of endangered animals. This has led to a total of eight species listed as “conservation dependent”, which is more of a guideline than a law and does not prevent fisheries from depleting the population for the sake of a profit. Additionally, sharks across the globe are already considered vulnerable due to various other factors such as human “self-defense” and the worsening state of the oceans.

We cannot let the school shark go extinct due to unethical loopholes in Australia’s environmental laws. Sign this petition to demand stronger protection of the species, and to ban fishing and market sales of the creature.

Dear Minister Ley,

School sharks are critically endangered due to fisheries killing them for their meat, sold as “flake” on the market. This species of shark has been in decline for some time now, but due to Australia’s “conservation dependent” label, they are on the verge of extinction. “Conservation dependent” is not a valid status for endangered species, it is nothing more than a loophole that allows hunters and fisheries to kill endangered wildlife for the sake of a profit.

Sharks across the globe are already endangered due to overfishing, human “self-defense” and the current state of the ocean. We cannot afford to lose these creatures as they are far too valuable to the ocean’s ecosystem. You must ensure that the school shark is placed on the official critically endangered list immediately.
