Success: Abusive Circus Punished for Cruel Animal Displays

Target: Governor Rolando Zapata Bello of Yucatan, Mexico

Goal: Praise governor for shutting down inhumane circus and delivering abused animals to sanctuary

The Harley Circus in Yucatan, Mexico has been fined $53,000 and ordered to permanently close following a recent ForceChange petition. An investigation by Mexico’s environmental protection agency revealed a black bear whose lower jaw had been purposely hacked off by trainers to prevent biting. In addition to the disfigured bear, three spider monkeys and one lion had been defanged and declawed to hinder similar attacks.

Animal rights group PETA reports that Harley Circus “…did not have a wildlife management plan or legal permits for some of the animals.” Officials ultimately revoked the circus’ license and discontinued its animal displays indefinitely. Fortunately, the affected animals have been transferred to excellent refuges where they will rehabilitate from their horrific injuries; the black bear has already undergone surgery to reconstruct its lower jaw.

In response to this terrible act of cruelty, activists heavily petitioned for the circus’ termination. It seems their voices have been heard and city officials have stopped the torture from continuing. News outlets have also reported recent Mexican legislation that bans circuses from featuring wild animals. Hopefully this leads to more animals being rescued and relocated to safer homes.

Though this event marks a defining victory for circus animals and activists alike, the next step is to demand criminal charges for animal abuse. As we celebrate the salvation of these mutilated creatures, we should also remember that those responsible have not been judged for their despicable actions. Urge Mexican officials to further rescue circus animals and punish those responsible for their torment.

Dear Governor Bello,

Thank you for shutting down the barbaric Harley Circus in Yucatan. Because of the Mexican government’s investigation, many animals have been saved from brutal, agonizing deaths. The recent legislation banning wild animals from performing in circuses will also save many more creatures from needless torture.

I urge you to continue protecting the welfare of innocent animals in the future. Though Harley Circus has been fined a large sum of money and ultimately shut down, I believe that animal cruelty charges were also warranted and should be considered for future perpetrators. Nonetheless, your recent efforts to pursue justice for these helpless creatures is noble and worth commending.

Thank you again for your swift and judicious actions in this matter. I hope that this success leads to many more animal rescues throughout Mexico.
