Protect Newly Discovered Monkeys from Extinction

Target:  Lee Chuan Seng, Chairman, National Environment Agency, Singapore

Goal: Protect two newly discovered monkey species from extinction at the hands of palm oil plantations.

Two monkey species recently discovered in Singapore are already critically endangered and facing extinction. The banded langur, once thought to be a single distinct species, has been discovered to actually be three unique species: the Raffles banded langur, the East Sumatran banded langur, and the Robinson’s banded langur. All of them are facing danger and death.

The Raffles banded langurs specifically have decreased in population by over 80 percent since the late twentieth century. Only 300 remain left in the world, with 60 left in Singapore, once their most popular home. Deforestation driven by palm oil plantations has spurred this population decline. They have been classified by conservationists as “critically endangered,” meaning they need assistance now in order to thrive. The East Sumatran banded langurs are also critically endangered.

These species have had a long and rich history, just now being fully discovered and appreciated by scientists. They must be protected or they will disappear forever. Sign the petition to demand that the species be protected from deforestation, habitat loss, and extinction.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Lee Chuan Seng,

Two newly discovered species of banded langur are already facing imminent extinction, driven mostly by habitat loss and deforestation caused by palm oil plantations. Only several hundred of the Raffles banded langur remain on the planet, with only several dozen left in your nation. They, along with the East Sumatran banded langur, have been classified as “critically endangered.”

To lose these species just as they are fully being understood and appreciated would be a tragedy. I ask that you protect these species from extinction at the hands of palm oil plantations and deforestation.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
