Target: Edwin Sabuhoro
Goal: Thank Edwin Sabuhoro for saving the lives of gorillas and providing humans with jobs and opportunities.
When Edwin Sabuhoro tricked poachers into selling him their baby gorillas, he sent the poachers to jail. However, he felt deeply guilty for tricking these people and asked them why they were hunting gorillas. When the poachers told him that starvation drove them to sell baby gorillas, he thought that there must be a more humane solution. By using his wits and intellect, Sabuhoro found ethical ways to save the lives of both gorillas and humans. Sign this petition and applaud this man for his conservation efforts.
Sabuhoro is a warden for Rwanda’s National Volcano Park. He is in charge of protecting the park and its animals from poachers, and these include the critically endangered mountain gorillas. Sabuhoro has a deep love for the gorillas, and he went undercover to root out poachers who were stealing baby gorillas from their mothers and selling them to the highest buyer.
Sabuhoro had $2,000 saved up, which he used to rent land, buy seeds, and provided the people with jobs as farmers. Not only had he given these people work, but he had given them enough food to live on and food to sell in the markets. Sabuhoro also founded a tourism company called Rwanda Eco Tours, where those who lived in or around the parks would be tasked with giving tours. The company made $30,000 in 2010, and the money was used to better the village. The communities now have an incentive to keep the national parks, while also providing for themselves and the environment. This man has gained recognition for his work towards conservation, and you can praise his efforts by signing this petition.
Dear Edwin Sabuhoro,
Recently, CNN wrote an article about your conservation efforts towards saving gorillas. Instead of punishing the poachers involved in smuggling gorillas, you found out why these poachers were doing these things. You took it a step further and actually helped them. You gave these people jobs and ways to take care of themselves. What you’ve done for your community is noble and extremely compassionate.
I hope you will continue to give back to the community and keep gorillas alive. These animals cannot be allowed to disappear, but they can only survive if humans care enough about their presence. I am grateful that you are creating this compassion within your community. Keep up the great work.
