Success: Pig Wrestling Event Canceled

Target: Rose Rynish, Event Coordinator at St. Patrick’s Parish

Goal: Applaud church for canceling cruel pig wrestling fundraiser.

A Wisconsin church has canceled an annual pig wrestling fundraiser in response to public backlash over the event, including a ForceChange petition. The Original Pig Rassle, a tradition which has been going on for 44 years, sees pigs brutalized and beaten in the name of entertainment. This year, the church has decided to do away with animal fundraisers entirely and hold an all-human mud football competition instead.

During the Pig Rassle, the animals are punched, kicked, body slammed, and jumped on. A pig is spooked and let loose into a pen where a group of men attempt to catch it and shove it into a barrel. At last year’s event, the pigs suffered severe injuries ranging from bruises and scrapes to broken bones and crushed limbs.

Last year, St. Patrick’s parish refused offers from animal sanctuaries to house and rehabilitate the pigs after the event, and instead opted to euthanize all 37 pigs forced into participating. The fundraiser prompted an investigation by the Global Conservation Group, which concluded that the event presents significant risks to animal cruelty and human safety.

Pigs are highly intelligent animals and experience extreme terror during these events. Pig wrestling is a barbaric and backward activity that has no place in modern society. Sign the petition below to thank St. Patrick’s Parish for opting for a more humane fundraising option.

Dear Ms. Rose Rynish,

St. Patricks’s Parish recently canceled its annual Original Pig Rassle, a fundraiser where pigs are kicked, punched, body slammed, and otherwise beaten for entertainment. The 44-year-old tradition involved a frightened pig being released into a pen where groups of people chase it in an attempt to capture it and throw it in a bucket. Last year, despite offers from animal sanctuaries to take in the pigs, all 37 pigs forced to participate in the event were euthanized. The fundraiser has been labeled as cruelty to animals as well as a risk to human safety by the Global Conservation Group.

As you know, this year the church will host an all-human mud football game instead, which is a much more humane alternative. Now, pigs will no longer be subjected to the pain and terror that is inflicted upon them during wrestling events. We, the undersigned, thank you for canceling the annual pig wrestle in favor of a more compassionate option.

  1. So glad to hear that this ridiculous and cruel event has been cancelled. My God …. how desperate are those folks for entertainment? Whoever started this so-called tradition needs to see a good shrink !!!!!!!!! Animals were not put on this planet for human entertainment.
