Protect Rare Salmon from Extinction

Target: Judy A. Camuso, Commissioner, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife

Goal: Protect the Atlantic salmon from extinction by awarding it endangered species protections.

The Atlantic salmon used to be commonplace in the freshwaters and saltwaters of Maine. Now, even with federal protections, the distinct species is facing extinction. Demand that the state act to protect this fish.

Overfishing and damming have been the biggest contributors to the species’ decline. The fish is a popular catch because it is the largest of all salmon species. It is also a popular food. Meanwhile, damming has divided populations and made it nearly impossible for the species to spread and reproduce. Without state protections, developers, fishermen, and others can find loopholes that exploit and endanger the species.

The state of Maine must act to reinforce protections for the species. Sign the petition to ask that Maine add the Atlantic salmon to its endangered species list so that it be given every possible chance at life.

Dear Commissioner Camuso,

The Atlantic salmon is the king of salmon due to its large size, but the very attribute that makes it stand out has led to its demise. Overfishing has depleted the population, while damming has made it impossible for those that survive to reproduce. Federal protections are available, but state protections will help reinforce the rules and regulations and give the species added chance of survival.

With your state home to a large portion of this species, I ask that you take steps to help protect it.
