Protect Rhinos From Poachers Who Take Advantage of Pandemic

Target: Barbara Creecy, Minister of the Department of Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries in South Africa

Goal: Protect rhinos from death by poaching in South Africa due to decline in tourism.

Rhinos are dying in greater numbers in South Africa, thanks to poachers taking advantage of the coronavirus lockdown. Parts of the country that are usually teeming with tourists are now ghost towns, and poachers have swooped in on the residing rhinos. Demand an immediate crack down on poaching in these areas for the protection of this species.

“Just as soon as the lockdown hit South Africa, we started having an incursion almost every single day,” stated Nico Jacobs, the founder of Rhino 911. The nonprofit provides emergency helicopter transport for rhinos in need of rescue in South Africa and it has been increasingly busy since the coronavirus hit the country. Poachers usually stay away from the North West province due to high tourist volume, but the coronavirus has suspended the tourist industry and the rhinos are now alone and vulnerable. At least nine have been found dead in the area since the lockdown began, with six more found in neighboring Botswana.

Something must be done to protect the rhinos during this pandemic. Sign below and demand that the Department of Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries give added protections to rhinos and crack down on poaching.

Dear Minister Creecy,

A 2-month-old white rhino calf became an orphan after the animal’s parents were killed by poachers in the North West province. The following day, two black rhinos died after their horns were callously hacked off. All of these animals suffered due to poaching, a crime which has increased substantially since coronavirus struck the South African tourist industry.

At least nine rhinos have been poached in the North West province. An additional six have died in Botswana. These are areas where rhinos are usually safe, given the amount of human activity. Now, poachers are using the lockdown for their own personal profit and the rhinos are paying with their lives.

I demand that you crack down on poaching and put preventative measures in place to protect the rhinos in these typically highly populated areas.
