Stop Cruise Ships From Disrupting Seal Mating Habits

Target: Mike Dunleavy, Governor of Alaska

Goal: Re-route noisy cruise ships to protect the mating habits of seals.

Harbor seals’ mating patterns across Alaska’s Glacier Bay are being disrupted by noisy cruise ships. Studies have shown that the noises generated by these ships can drown out even the loudest mating call of these animals, falling by roughly 0.86 decibels for every increase in man-made noises.

“If man-made noise is impeding the breeding success of harbor seals, this could have important repercussions at the local and national level for seal management and conservation,” says Dr. Sarah Marley, a scientist at the University of Portsmouth. Seal populations in certain locations are already struggling due to climate change, and the ongoing horrors of seal clubbing as a sport. If they cannot safely mate, their numbers are doomed.

The best way to protect seals from such a fate is to re-route the cruise ships, to keep them away from where seals swim out to mate or make their homes. Sign this petition to help preserve seals’ mating habits by redirecting all cruise ships in the area.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Dunleavy,

The noises from cruise ships in Glacier Bay are disrupting the mating habits of local harbor seals. The noises generated by a single ship can drown out even the loudest seal mating call, according to recent studies, and if seals cannot properly mate, their numbers will drop.

Seals have already been badly endangered by habitat loss due to climate change, as well as the ongoing sport of seal clubbing. If this continues, their numbers will drop to near-extinction levels. You cannot let this happen. You must help protect seals’ mating habits and prevent future extinction. I demand that you redirect all cruise ship routes to keep them away from seal habitats and mating grounds as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
