Protect the Spring Chinook Salmon from Extinction

Target: Neil Jacobs, PhD, NOAA Administrator and Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere

Goal: Protect the Oregon coast spring chinook salmon from habitat loss and extinction.

Logging, overfishing, and pollution are threatening the future of the spring chinook salmon, a rare salmon species found in Oregon. Now, the United States National Marine Fisheries Service is considering classifying the species as threatened or endangered. Sign the petition to show your support for this effort.

Logging and other diversions disrupt water flow, making it hard for the species to reproduce. Invasive species, harvest, and pollution also threaten the salmon species, once considered the “king” of salmon. Over 100 years ago, they could be found in nearly every river and stream across Oregon. Now, they are only found in a handful. In some locations, only 51 fish spawned last year. Over 2,000 fish once spawned.

Sign the petition to show your support for this new effort by the U.S. Fisheries Service. Ask that the organization protect the future of this freshwater species.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Jacobs,

In 1900, thousands of spring chinook salmon made their way throughout the freshwater streams and rivers of Oregon. That number has depleted drastically due to logging, pollution, and invasive species. In some areas, only 51 fish spawned last year.

Every year, the population shrinks. Now is an important time to grant the species endangered status before the damage becomes irreversible. I support your consideration of the spring chinook salmon as a federally endangered species.

Sincerely,
