Goal: Thank Mattel for taking a stand against the abuse of captive sea creatures by canceling the production of SeaWorld Barbie.
Mattel has halted production of a SeaWorld Trainer Barbie following growing public backlash over the amusement park’s treatment of animals. The doll as well as the Sea WorldTrainer Play Set, which comes with a wet suit, a pool, and two toy animals, will no longer be produced or shipped but will remain on sale in stores until sold out. The move comes only months after several major brands canceled partnerships with SeaWorld, including Taco Bell, Southwest Airlines, and the Miami Dolphins.
Public concern over the welfare of Sea World’s animals has been rising ever since the release of Blackfish, a documentary film examining the effects of captivity on killer whales. These intelligent and social animals are kept in tanks only a few times larger than their bodies, without companionship or natural stimulation, and are forced to practice and perform unnatural tricks many times a day. This can cause the animals extreme stress, provoking them to harm themselves or others. According to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Organization, at least 44 orca whales have died at the facility.
Barbie has traditionally been an animal-friendly doll, and has been fur-free since her creation. Particularly since the toy is sold to young, impressionable children, it is important that Mattel does not promote SeaWorld and the abuse that goes on there. Sign the petition below to commend the world’s largest doll making company for taking a stand against the abuse of orca whales and other sea animals.
Dear Christopher A. Sinclair,
Mattel has announced that it will no longer ship SeaWorld Barbie and the related play sets. The cancellation follows similar moves by Taco Bell, Southwest Airlines, and the Miami Dolphins, who have all withdrawn their support from the facility over concerns about the welfare of captive animals. SeaWorld has seen a sharp decline in popularity since the release of Blackfish, a documentary examining how the poor conditions they are kept in can cause animals to lash out.
Millions of young girls look up to Barbie as a role model. By withdrawing your support from this abusive facility, Mattel is setting a positive example for younger generations. We, the undersigned, praise the cancellation of SeaWorld Trainer Barbie.
