Ban Inhumane Contest That Kills Hundreds of Wild Animals for a Prize

Target: Larry Hogan, Governor of Maryland

Goal: Encourage the ban of cruel animal-killing contest in Maryland.

Maryland has recently considered banning its annual wildlife-killing contests, which take the lives of hundreds of wild animals per year for the sake of big cash prizes. The winner of a recent Frederick County competition killed nearly 40 foxes and took home roughy $400 as a prize.

Similar to the New York coyote-killing contests that have earned much public ire, Maryland’s wildlife hunts trick animals such as foxes and bobcats via faking the sound of their prey, then luring them close enough to be shot to death. Participants claim they are “helping the balance of nature” by killing these creatures, but in truth it is just a contest to see who can take the most lives and win money for it. These are living creatures, not walking targets, and deserve to be treated with more respect.

The contests are currently under heavy investigation, and so far the bill to ban them has only had a single hearing with no word on how close it is to acceptance. We cannot let the cruel, inhumane slaughter of wildlife continue, and must ensure that this bill passes. Sign this petition to urge Maryland’s government to finalize this ban.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Hogan,

Wildlife killing contests in Maryland take the lives of hundreds of wild animals per year, all for the sake of cash prizes and trophies. A recent contest winner alone killed nearly 40 foxes, taking home roughly $400 as a prize. These events have earned public ire from environmental groups and the public.

It has come to our attention recently that the state is considering a ban on these contests, but has yet to deliver any further news regarding Senate hearings or bringing the bill to the House of Representatives. You must support this ban on the senseless murder of innocent animals. Many claim the contests are “helping the balance of nature” by removing predators such as foxes and bobcats, but this is untrue. It is a showcase of violence for glory, and it cannot continue. Stop these inhumane contests as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
