Protect Meerkats From Threats Caused By Climate Change

Target: Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, African Union

Goal: Secure funding and intergovernmental cooperation for preservation of threatened meerkats and other vital wildlife.

Meerkat pups in the Kalahari Desert are under threat from rising temperatures, reaching lower than normal body weight and dying before reaching adulthood. The increasing heat in this desert is directly due to climate change. Water evaporates more quickly, reducing the amount available to juvenile meerkats and damaging key food sources. Meerkats play a vital role in the ecosystem of the Kalahari, controlling invertebrate populations and acting as a food source for medium-sized predators like eagles and jackals.

But the increasingly harmful impact of human-caused climate change has been driving down their body size for over two decades, weakening a key link in the food chain. Depleted food and water supplies, and consequent lower body mass, leave meerkats with lower strength, less energy, and decreased resilience in fighting off predators. This imbalance could lead to not only the decline of this species, but it could also upset the Kalahari ecosystem and damage food sources relied on by humans.

Because the Kalahari covers parts of Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa, the responsibility for coordinating efforts to save these animals lies with the African Union (AU), the intergovernmental organization to which all three belong. Sign the petition below to urge the AU to provide funding and coordination to fight this decline.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Sacko,

Meerkat populations are growing smaller and weaker in the Kalahari desert due to climate change, threatening their ability to effectively fulfill their crucial role in the ecosystem. To survive, they’ll need the help of researchers and volunteers, but this can’t be done without help.

I urge you to provide funding and coordinate efforts between Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa to save these animals before it’s too late.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  1. Not sure how much the Commissioner of the African Union can do when climate change is generated by the Worlds greatest polluters who deny their role in it and even deny that global warming is actually happening – does the cap fit, Trump and America.
