Stop Growing Trend of Beehive Theft

Target: Gavin Newsom, Governor of California

Goal: Stop the theft of beehives to benefit problematic almond industry.

Over 1,000 beehives have been stolen over the past few years to benefit the almond industry, with the latest loss being a whopping 92 at once while their keeper’s back was turned. Reports state that this was no random theft, but part of an organized crime wave in which hives are taken and hacked to pieces in hopes of “multiplying” the hives’ populations.

The almond industry has already caused many problems for the bee population. Almond growers rely on deadly pesticides that outright kill or damage the reproductive abilities of the insects, while an overgrowth of the nut trees kills the biodiversity which bees need to thrive. This recent wave of organized crime not only rips the bees from their familiar surroundings, but kills even more of them as their homes are destroyed in a blatantly misguided attempt to spread the “wealth.”

This crime wave must be stopped immediately. Bees are in enough danger without having their homes hacked to bits for the sake of a profit. Sign this petition to end hive theft as soon as possible.

Dear Governor Newsom,

Beehive theft has reached critical mass in California, as an organized ring of thieves steal hives from beekeepers and hack them to bits to sell to almond farmers. This is just one of the many problems the almond industry has caused for honeybees over the past several years; the population is already in danger due to the use of pesticides and a lack of biodiversity.

You must put a stop to this ring of crime against honeybees immediately. This is not only blatant property theft, but the process harms and kills many honeybees, a species that is already in grave danger of extinction. The almond industry has done enough damage to the population. Do not allow this disturbing trend to continue.
