Stop Fires That Leave Orangutans Starving

Target: Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Minister of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia

Goal: Save orangutans from fire-induced starvation conditions.

A new report from Rutgers University researchers has revealed that Indonesian orangutans are now known to be suffering from starvation and deprivation due to intentional fires in the rainforest. The researchers found that the orangutans body chemistry and actions were consistent with recognized conditions of starvation, with the apes moving sluggishly or little to conserve energy, experiencing visible anguish, and eating grass and bark due to a lack of fruit.

Fires have long been used in forest-based industries such as palm oil production, and it’s been known or suspected for some time that orangutans suffer enormous consequences from controlled burning and forest clearance. However, this new study is the first confirmation that orangutans in Central Kalimantan province are suffering from serious, long-term negative health.

The endangerment of this vibrant and precious species is one of the greatest and most visible tragedies of the ongoing climate crisis, yet no relief appears to be in sight. If action isn’t taken soon, these animals may be gone forever.

Sign the petition below to demand that Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Forestry take immediate steps to relieve the beleaguered orangutans.

Dear Mrs. Bakar,

It has been revealed that orangutans in Central Kalimantan province are now suffering from starvation. These animals continue to suffer ever more while the world looks on, and the time for action has come.

I demand that you work with conservationists and use your ministry’s resources to offer immediate relief to the orangutans, in order to save them from irreversible damage. A failure to act will be a tragic crime.
