Target: UEFA President Michel Platini
Goal: Ban ritual animal sacrifice in European football
Animal rights groups including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently began applying pressure to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for allowing the practice of animal sacrifice before games. Such a terrible and cruel practice has no place in sports and must be stopped immediately.
Appeals to UEFA President, Michel Platini, started after it was discovered that the Kazakh team Shakhter Karagandy had been killing sheep before games for good luck. To make matters worse, the ritual slaughter is performed in public. A sheep is brought to the team’s end of the field during practice before the official game where it is stabbed to death. Shakhter’s coach, Viktor Kumykov, has responded to warnings, saying, “All I can say is that every team and every club has its own pre-match traditions and rituals…We will try to respect our traditions and those traditions were in place even before we came to the club.” When asked if the ritual would continue, he replied, “Possibly, yes.”
PETA has since responded to Kumykov’s comments, saying “We hope Mr. Platini will agree that animal sacrifice has no place in modern society, and we hope the Uefa will act swiftly to ensure that the beautiful game is not further stained with the blood of animals.” The concern is that there are currently no rules according to European football regulations regarding to pregame rituals and practices and it is unclear as to how the league can address such bizarre circumstances. With enough pressure, however, the UEFA will be forced to place an official ban on ritual sacrifice or any other act of animal cruelty.
Please sign the petition below to demand that UEFA President Platini stop Shakhter Karagandy from harming any more animals.
Dear President Platini,
The Kazakh football team Shakhter Karagandy recently incited a great deal of protest after it was discovered that they have been ritually sacrificing sheep before games. It is not uncommon for sports teams to have traditions intended to cultivate good luck, but these activities should never cause harm for any reason or result in the loss of a life. A superstition or tradition is not worth more than the lives of the sheep Shakhter is taking and neither is the sport as a whole.
Please do something immediately to stop Shakhter Karagandy from continuing to perform such a horrendous and pointless act and also prevent similar acts of cruelty in the future.
