Target: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association’s Assistant Administrator for Fisheries Eileen Sobeck
Goal: Protect the porbeagle shark under the Endangered Species Act.
The porbeagle shark is a threatened species that has been targeted by fisherman, captured and killed for their fins, hides, livers, and meat. However, the porbeagle shark’s survival is essential to maintaining the ecosystems of the oceans. While efforts have been made to rectify this situation, the porbeagle shark still remains unprotected under the Endangered Species Act.
The porbeagle shark has been under the pressure of commercial fishing for quite some time. The shark is captured and sold internationally, the demand coming from countries like Europe, Japan, as well as the United States. In addition to being exploited by commercial fishing, the population of this species has also diminished because of bycatch—when unwanted creatures trapped in a fishing catch are discarded and left to die.
Some populations of the porbeagle shark have decline as much as 90 percent because of intense fishing pressure. This shark species cannot sustain heavy fishing as it has a low reproductive capacity and humans are killing off sharks at too high of a rate.
The porbeagle shark plays an important part to the oceans’ ecosystems. The species needs relief to restore its populations. A recent decision has been made to review the shark’s status and if it is eligible to be protected by the Endangered Species Act. By signing the petition below, you will be demanding that the National Marine Fisheries Service takes the necessary actions to protect the porbeagle shark and ensure that it is listed under the Endangered Species Act.
Dear Ms. Sobeck,
The porbeagle shark has been a target of fishermen for years, highly valued for its meat and fins. However, this intense fishing pressure has had a disastrous effect on the shark’s population, diminishing it to dangerously low numbers.
The porbeagle shark is unable to sustain these heavy fishing pressures as it has a low reproductive capacity, unable to reproduce at fast enough rates to keep up with the heavy fishing demand. If fishing practices continue as is, humans may target these sharks until they’re extinct.
While issues surrounding the porbeagle’s survival have been addressed, not enough has been done to protect the species. Please list the porbeagle shark under the Endangered Species Act so that its survival may be ensured and its populations may be protected. Act now to end the exploitation of the porbeagle shark.
