Save Retired Greyhounds from Slaughter

Target: Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott

Goal: Re-home retired greyhounds in the Australia instead of killing them.

The discovery of 55 greyhound carcasses–most belonging to dogs who were shot and dumped into a mass grave–has astounded the public in Queensland. The area is known for its racing greyhound industry, and the issue has been hotly debated by animal lovers and those who are fond of racing greyhounds. The discovery of this mass dog grave has ignited the need for the government to devote more resources for these animals when they retire, otherwise these dogs will be euthanized, or worse, slaughtered. Sign this petition and urge Prime Tony Abbott and the government of Australia to find homes for retired greyhounds.

The incident of the 55 dead greyhounds has indeed shocked the community, but it is not uncommon for racing greyhounds to be treated like objects or possessions. Since many greyhounds in Queensland are trained by chasing live bait, it makes it difficult to re-home retired greyhounds. These dogs are prone towards running after small animals and killing them. Instead of teaching these retired dogs not to run after small game, those in the racing industry would rather dispose of them.

This incident is indeed distressing and the Queensland police are doing all they can to find the suspects responsible for the deaths of these dogs. However, other measures need to be made for the sake of all retired racing dogs. Funding and other efforts need to be made to re-home them. This means that greyhounds should be taught how to walk on the leash without chasing small animals, how to behave in a home, and be socialized with other dogs and humans. All of these things require funds, time, and trained people.

Dogs have been the companions of humans for thousands of years. It would be inhumane and unethical to kill these dogs because humans trained them to be killers and racers. Dogs have feelings and can still offer companionship after their racing days are over. If you believe that more needs to be done to save and re-home racing greyhounds, please sign this petition. Tell Prime Minister Tony Abbott that our dogs deserve a second chance at life.

Dear Prime Minister Tony Abbott,

Police in Queensland found a mass grave containing the bodies of 55 greyhounds. Most of these dogs were shot, as investigators not only found gunshot wounds, but also .22 caliber shells at the site. This is most disturbing, especially for those of us who love dogs.

This incident highlights a growing need to place more resources towards re-homing retired greyhounds. Experts have spoken on how difficult it is to re-home retired greyhounds because of their hunting tendencies, but humans made them this way. It is wrong to kill any animal because humans deemed that they are no longer fit for their purposes. Greyhounds were trained to race on the track by humans, and humans should ensure that greyhounds lead a happy life. As a dog lover I implore the Australian government to devote more resources towards re-homing greyhounds.
