Protect Animal Victims of Domestic Violence

Target: Representative Liz Vazquez of Anchorage, Alaska

Goal: Support protecting animals from being used as pawns in divorces and domestic violence cases.

Currently, in Alaska, family pets have little to no legal protection in domestic cases, like divorce or domestic violence. Liz Vazquez, State Representative of Anchorage, is attempting to give animal victims a voice in efforts to keep them from harm in these situations. This is important because often times animals will not be fairly considered and their well-being may be jeopardized.

This bill would consider animals to be marital property. In the case of a divorce, the court would be able to decide which family member the pet will live with depending on which household would be better suited to the animal’s needs. This would also protect pets that are involved in domestic disputes as leverage, which would take power away from people who use animals as punishment or revenge against a victim. This bill would also help victims of domestic violence who have left to file a petition intended to gain custody of the animal, or ensure that it remains unharmed.

This bill will not only help animals, it will help the people who love them as well. If animals are protected, victims will feel more confident leaving abusive situations because they no longer need to fear that their abuser will take out anger on the family pet. Sign this petition to commend Representative Vazquez for this incredibly important bill and support its transition into law.

Dear Representative Vasquez,

You recently drafted a bill that would give the court the ability to decide where a family pet is to live in domestic cases. One of the amazing things about this bill is it covers many different situations that could be potentially harmful to a pet, including if the pet were being used as leverage in a domestic violence dispute. It will give victims of domestic violence the courage to leave their situation when many are currently afraid to because they fear for their pet’s well being.

Thank you for your dedication to the domesticated animals of Alaska. Please use my signature, along with the other signatures that this petition generates, to push this bill through to law. Animals in Alaska need this protection; you are their much-needed voice.

Please continue to do all that you can to help the domesticated animals of Alaska. Your compassion means the world to them, and all of us.
