Target: Former Congressman, Isaac Mekler
Goal: Praise the Peruvian people for demanding harsher punishments for animal abusers.
Protections for abused animals have been a major concern for the people of Peru in recent years. Former Congressman, Isaac Mekler, has connected with the Peruvian non-profit group Grupo Caridad to start the initiative to end this tragedy. They are calling for the criminalization and substantial jail time for the cruel treatment, abandonment, and neglect of animals.
Grupo Caridad, a non-profit aimed at ending animal abuse, has been actively utilizing social media as a platform to spread its important message. It has been diligently collecting signatures in order to be able to submit its proposed bill for legislative discussion. Grupo Caridad needed to collect 80,000 signatures, and successfully achieved its goal ahead of the April 2015 deadline.
This new bill proposes to punish people who physically hurt their pets, institutions that conduct experiments on live animals, and people who hold dogfights, and cockfights. The proposed bill includes penalties of up to five years in jail for those found guilty of mistreating an animal, and rises to six years if the animals die from the mistreatment. Peru’s existing animal laws say that the protection of animals is a matter of national interest, but are punished by negligible fines.
Please sign this petition to thank Isaac Mekler and the people of Peru for their diligent efforts to put an end to animal abuse.
Dear Former Congressman Isaac Mekler,
The subject of animal abuse in Peru has garnered support from individuals nationwide. It is inspiring to see that your work with the non-profit group Grupo Caridad has made such a huge impact on this matter. Not only did you and the group raise substantial awareness through social media, you also achieved your goal of 80,000 signatures ahead of schedule.
Animal abuse is a subject that is sad to discuss, but evidently demands everybody’s attention. However, the response from the Peruvian people has been so impressive. It is comforting to know that so many people want to see this new proposed bill put in place to protect animals. Nobody should get a free pass for abusing an innocent animal. If this bill gets passed, penalties for animal abusers will be much more substantial than they have been in the past.
Thank you and Grupo Caridad for all of your hard work in combatting animal abuse.
