Put an End to Circus Animal Suffering in New Jersey

Target: Phil Murphy, Governor of New Jersey

Goal: Support a ban on all traveling animal acts within the state.

Earlier this year, it appeared as though New Jersey would take the lead on animal rights and ban traveling circus acts that feature wild animals. Even though the proposed ban had unanimous support in the state senate, then-governor Chris Christie refused to sign it into law, and forced what has been referred to as ‘Nosey’s Law’ back for further review. This law, named after an elephant who has notoriously suffered in captivity at the hands of an allegedly abusive circus owner, must be signed into law this time so that animals like Nosey no longer have to suffer for the sake of human amusement and profit.

All wild animals, including elephants, suffer tremendously due to the inhumane conditions they are forced to endure in traveling circuses. Many are made to perform unnatural tricks through cruel, fear-based training methods. When they are not performing, they are often kept confined and chained in small cages. Large, noisy crowds can also cause distress for these creatures, leading to a life of near-constant psychological terror.

Animals like Nosey should not have to endure further suffering in New Jersey or anywhere else. Sign this petition to urge new governor Phil Murphy to at long last ban all travelling circus acts that exploit innocent wild creatures.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Murphy,

Earlier this year, your predecessor Chris Christie pocket-vetoed a bill referred to as ‘Nosey’s Law’ that would have banned all travelling circus acts that feature wild animals from entering New Jersey. This law would have been a nationwide first, and could have set a historic precedent for improving animal welfare, but it was instead kicked back to the house and senate to vote on once more. Now it is up to you to pick up where Christie would not.

Circus animals face exploitation and hardships that no living being should have to endure. They live unnatural lives of perpetual fear and are often forced to perform using cruel training methods. New Jersey can do better than this. That is why we urge you to take a stand for these animals and sign this bill into law if it passes the upcoming state senate vote.

Sincerely,

  4. I am so glad that the heartless and mindless Chris Christie has gone so please, Governor Murphy, make an example of New Jersey as a humane, forward looking state and refuse to let travelling circuses with their attendant heartlessness and cruelty set up their despicable trade in New Jersey. Show other states which still support this backward business that NJ is looking to a kinder and more humane future. Thank you.

  8. Mary J Zambrana says:

It’s well-known by those who voted for relief for circus animals that they are under the control of those who value greed above sanctity. Put the measure up for passage in your state legislature. Stand up for the voiceless innocents to prove that New Jersey is a state of consciousness. Let all of the animals from all types of circuses be able to go to sanctuaries. This is the right thing to do.
