Justice for Animals Found Dead in Pet Store

Target: Lisa Madigan, Attorney General of Illinois

Goal: Ensure pet store owner faces justice for allegedly letting 41 animals die inside a closed store.

Over four dozen small animals were reportedly found dead in an Illinois pet store, which had been closed and without power due to non-payment of bills earlier in May. The officers who responded to the complaint filed were reportedly “overwhelmed” by the stench of death and ammonia upon investigating the facility and discovering the corpses of rabbits, snakes, mice, and other small pets. Thankfully, 56 animals were still alive and rescued immediately.

There is never an acceptable reason to allow so many animals to die. These poor creatures were allegedly locked up for over two weeks with no heat and nobody to take care of them, despite store owner Jessica Spangler’s claim that she had arranged for someone to look after them. One can only imagine how these animals suffered and starved in the freezing cold, how filthy their enclosures must have been. It is a miracle so many animals survived, though it is unknown as to how the survivors are faring at the moment. It is possible that they have incurred health problems after being left to starve in the cold so long.

Spangler has been arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, and we must ensure that she fully faces justice for allegedly leaving so many innocent creatures to die in misery.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Madigan,

Pet store owner Jessica Spangler has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals after 41 small pets were reportedly found dead in her store. The store had reportedly been closed for over two weeks following a failure to pay the electric bill, leaving these poor creatures to freeze and starve in their own filth; the officers who responded to the complaint claim they were overpowered by the stench of death and ammonia.

Spangler’s alleged cruelty is unacceptable. Despite her claims that she had arranged for someone else to look after the animals, the poor innocent pets were still left to die, allegedly due to her poor business sense and planning skills. Thankfully, 56 of the animals in the store survived and were able to be rescued in time, but this does not make up for the 41 who cannot be saved.

You must ensure that Spangler faces justice for her alleged neglect and poor planning. These innocent creatures deserved better than to languish and starve in their own filth prior to a horrible death.

Sincerely,
