Stop Creating Killer Kangaroos with Careless Human Actions

Target: David Littleproud, Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources in Australia

Goal: Cease actions that are escalating kangaroo attacks on humans.

Across Australia, scores of normally peaceful kangaroos have been transformed into aggressive, dangerous threats. These animals have not changed through any fault of their own, but rather as the likely result of  human behaviors. The rash of kangaroo attacks gripping the country do not just claim human victims, but animal victims as well.

Many of the more recent headline-making attacks came  from the grounds of a hospital in New South Wales, Australia, where tourists have received gash wounds and other injuries following aggressive kicks or maulings from nearby kangaroos. Experts studying this phenomenon believe the local animals have become addicted to high-in-sugar foods such as carrots, chips, or even fast food fed to them by tourists The kangaroos have likely come to associate people with these foods and have even attacked passersby who smell of such food.

Unfortunately, in similar cases worldwide involving aggressive animals, the animals themselves usually suffer the most. Many are killed because they are deemed a threat to the public. Yet in most  of these cases, human actions molded this aggression. Kangaroos are natural vegetarians who are now having their peaceful demeanor reshaped by irresponsible human actions. More signs have been posted in public places and more public awareness has been raised about the dangers of feeding, but this is not enough.

Sign this petition to demand the Australian government implement much stronger guidelines that protect the welfare of some of their nation’s most renowned living beings.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Littleproud,

Kangaroos are etched into the culture and legacy of Australia. Recently, they have gained an undeserved reputation as aggressive beasts. The kangaroo attacks populating Australia’s news outlets do not represent the true nature of these animals, however. Rather, they reflect the lacking nature of comprehensive animal welfare standards in Australia.

Scientific evidence indicates these animals have been conditioned into aggressive behavior by humans who have essentially made them junk-food addicts. While public efforts to educate tourists about feeding these animals have risen, these measures are still lacking, as is punishment for those who blatantly disregard rules about feeding.

Australia has long relied on its regions to implement their own animal welfare practices, but progress is finally being made on nationwide standards and guidelines inspired by the Model Codes of Practice. Please help make these standards a reality and include specific guidance relating to human practices that negatively impact your nation’s most awe-inspiring animals.

Sincerely,
