Support Animal Welfare Activism in Belarus

Target: Andrei Kobyakov, Prime Minister of Belarus

Goal: Demand Belarus law support animal welfare activists and the animals themselves.

Thousands of animals are captured and put to death every year in Belarus as a means of controlling the stray population. Healthy animals are only kept in the shelters for a week; if they have not been adopted at that point, they are euthanized. Worse, animal welfare activists are being persecuted for attempting to bring exposure to and remedy this problem.

The animal protection laws in Belarus are a mess, with none of the suggested methods to improve them being taken into consideration at this point. Purebred animals are in higher demand, leaving mixed breeds to die on the street. Shelters are grim and lonely places referred to as ‘death camps,’ in which the animals are given as little care as possible and forced to await death unless they are adopted, the latter being is extremely rare. Activists try to spread the word on social media to find these animals homes, with varying results, but many have been unfairly silenced by the shelters as they tried to expose the issues.

We cannot let this continue. The animals in these shelters deserve so much better, and the activists deserve all of our support in ensuring things change. Sign this petition to demand Belarus support animal welfare activists and change its laws to protect the animals.

Dear Prime Minister Kobyakov,

Thousands of animals are dying in shelters across Belarus, and animal welfare activists are being silenced and persecuted as they attempt to draw exposure to the problem and save these animals. Cats and dogs are rounded up and taken to shelters that are little more than grim ‘death camps,’ where they are put to death after a week if they are not adopted. Due to the demand for purebred pets, very few of these animals find homes.

You must change the law to improve conditions in these shelters and increase the longevity of these cats and dogs. These poor creatures deserve better than to be captured and killed simply because they cannot find homes. Furthermore, the activists who work to protect these animals deserve respect for their efforts, as well as protection from silencing tactics and persecution. Conditions and laws must improve overall across the country, as soon as possible.

PM Of Belarus PLEASE have a heart and stop the KILLING of these poor animals that didn’t ask to be born just to be killed. Why not try to control population by spaying and neutering? PLEASE these sweet animals do not deserve to die.
