Target: Greg Abbot, Governor of Texas
Goal: Demand justice for emu allegedly tortured to death by high school students.
A group of teenagers in Texas allegedly tortured and killed a pet emu, according to an article in the Huffington Post. A high school football player will now face a felony animal abuse charge for his role in the crime. Cassius Mankin allegedly stole the emu Molly from a home and tortured her to death by punching her eyes out and choking her.
Mankin is now free on bond, and it was reported that all students allegedly involved were suspended from extracurricular activities. The family that the emu was taken from says that they feel like they’ve lost a special part of their family, according to a report in USA Today.
Although there is little doubt that this incident was the result of poor judgement and kids behaving badly, the nature of the crime is particularly brutal and should be taken very seriously by authorities. These sorts of actions are psychotic, and they are an indicator of deeper issues in the lives of these kids. They should be sent through the justice system just like any other adult to show them that their actions do have consequences. Furthermore, they should all be required to undergo extensive psychological treatment to ensure that they get the help they need before they become a bigger problem.
Sign this petition to ask the governor of Texas to ensure that the students in this case are both prosecuted and treated for their mental disturbances.
Dear Governor Abbot,
I want to bring your attention to a horrifying case of animal abuse in the state of Texas in which a high school student and some of his friends allegedly stole an emu before gouging its eyes out and choking it to death. I would like to express my hope that animal abuse is met with harsh penalties in Texas, particularly heinous cases of torture like this one. I believe that these sorts of acts are indicative of dangerous personality traits that will require extensive psychological treatment if they are to be corrected.
I feel that the people involved in this case should be sent through the legal justice system, and they should also undergo extensive medical and psychological treatment. I believe that this is a microcosm of what needs to happen to animal abusers, not only in Texas, but all over the world. Not only should they be punished, but they should be administered quality psychological care to ensure that they are not a threat to other people. By doing this, I feel that we will have done a lot to make the world a safer place for humans and animals alike.
