Push for Legal Reform After Pet Pig Reportedly Eaten by Owners

Target: David Eby, Attorney General of British Columbia

Goal: Reform Canadian law to make adoptive pet contracts legally binding.

A potbellied pig adopted by a couple from Vancouver Island was reportedly recently slaughtered and eaten by her new owners. Her name was Molly, and she was rescued by the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The shelter was informed about the alleged incident after an informant reportedly shared some disturbing social media postings. According to reports, the couple allegedly couldn’t handle the responsibilities of training a pig, so they ultimately decided to eat her. Although pigs require a lot of special attention, this is no excuse to murder your pet.

Authorities confirmed that Molly was consumed after the SPCA filed a complaint. Yet law enforcement said they couldn’t pursue legal charges since the pig wasn’t tortured. Current legislation in Canada doesn’t prohibit owners from killing their own animals as long as they don’t suffer in the process. The fact of the matter is that the adopters signed a contract stating they wouldn’t eat Molly. Based on the breaching of the contract, this should be considered a criminal offense. Sign the petition below to push for legislative reform and bring justice to Molly.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Eby,

No pet should be adopted one day and eaten the next simply because the owners can’t handle the responsibility. This reportedly recently happened to Molly the Vietnamese potbellied pig on Vancouver Island. Originally, she was rescued from dangerous conditions and nursed back to health at the SPCA – only to end up on her alleged killers’ dinner table. Not only did this organization try to ensure that Molly was being sent to a safe home, but they literally revitalized her. Unfortunately, present-day legislation says this isn’t a criminal offense as long as the animal didn’t experience ‘too much’ anguish.

This is where you could come in. Regardless of the police officers saying Molly passed away peacefully, the legal loophole is that the owners specifically signed a contract stating that they wouldn’t eat her. These documents should be legally binding in hopes of preventing another travesty like this from occurring. The shelter trusted these people, and look where that got the poor creature. Based on your position in Canadian government, please consider this reform as an attempt to prioritize progressive animal rights throughout your country. You have vast potential to influence and educate your province about animal cruelty.

Sincerely,
