Hold Retailer Accountable for Recent Pet Fatalities

Recently, a fourth animal allegedly lost its life at national pet retailer PetSmart in a trend that has attracted nationwide attention and a planned national protest for early May. This latest fatality came in late March at a New Jersey store location that had already faced scrutiny for another untimely death. Eight-year-old Abby and another dog were brought one morning for a run-of-the-mill grooming appointment. Within hours, Abby’s owner reportedly received a curt, seconds-long phone call informing him that he needed to pick up the remains of his beloved pet at a nearby location. To this day, the heartbroken owner has still received no answers concerning Abby’s fate.

A similar tragedy awaited Lulu, a 14-year-old canine who allegedly passed away following a grooming at the same location. Both animals are reported to have become suddenly unresponsive at their grooming appointment—a particularly troubling outcome in Abby’s case as the dog’s vet had recently deemed her very healthy. Two additional canine pets reportedly took their final breaths at New Jersey PetSmart locations late last year, one death taking place on Christmas Eve.

PetSmart employees and leadership are accused of showing callous disregard for these animals and a disheartening lack of necessary action and oversight: a combination that has apparently fueled this epidemic of preventable tragedies. Abby, Lulu, Henry: these are just a few of the names connected by two common threads. Each came from a family who loved them, created cherished memories with them, and ultimately mourned them.

Each reportedly died under your company’s care.

In some circumstances, these animals apparently ceased breathing during routine grooming exercises. At other times, the deaths have included a more sinister aspect, with serious injuries that allegedly signaled abusive malpractice. During the most recent tragedy, the individual who lost his beloved pet characterized the 20-second notification of death he received as “crude” and “beyond comprehension.”

Is this truly the legacy you would leave individuals who entrust their dear friends and family members to your care? Help families already impacted by these tragedies find closure. More so, enact stronger guidance, oversight, and regulation for your stores and for the individuals hired to serve animal welfare and public interests.
