Ban Pet Meat Consumption in All 50 States

Target: Charles Schumer, Minority Leader of the United States Senate

Goal: Outlaw the consumption of pet meat across the United States.

Only seven of the 50 United States have banned outright the consumption of dog and cat meat. While it is illegal for slaughterhouses to kill and sell these animals, individuals can get away with killing these animals and selling them person-to-person, and this loophole has been exploited for quite some time.

While the consumption of dog and cat meat is not as widespread in the U.S. as it is in Asia, the very occurrence of it is disgusting and unethical. In fact, it may be even more horrific in the U.S. due to individuals killing the animals with their own hands rather than relying on slaughterhouses to get their meat. In 2003, 150 dogs were seized from a man who was raising them for meat—because of the conditions they were kept in, not because the man intended to eat them.

We cannot let this continue, lest the practice become more widespread in the United States. It is a disgrace that this trend has slipped under our radar for so long, and we must put a stop to it. Sign this petition to stop the consumption of dogs and cats as meals all across the United States.

Dear Senator Schumer,

The consumption of dog and cat meat is legal in all but seven of the United States: California, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. Slaughterhouses are banned from killing dogs and cats in all states, but 43 states have been exploiting a loophole: it is still legal for individuals to kill cats and dogs, and to sell them person-to-person.

This trend has slipped under the radar due to the outcry against pet meat trades in Asia; likely no one had ever considered that it would be going on in the U.S. But it is happening, and while it is not as widespread in the U.S. as it is in Asia, the very existence of the trend is unethical and disgusting. You must implement and enforce a full ban on the trade and consumption of pet meat in all 50 of the United States, as soon as possible. Help us save the lives of cats and dogs before they become someone’s next meal.

  2. Yes- you have a large loophole and it is high time it was tightened up. Dog and cat eating is a primitive and mindless and shameful business and is a disgrace to your country. Can you think of any developed countries that carry on like this? Is it not time you made some progress? Man up and make progress-stop eating everything in sight, show some compassion and sense!
