Stop Pet Store from Renting Chicks

Target: Steve Lane, Owner of Steve’s Wonderful World of Pets

Goal: End the unsafe practice of renting baby chicks to customers as a promotion for the Easter season.

The well-being and even the lives of baby chicks are being put at risk by a pet shop that rents them out to customers as an Easter promotion. The chicks are sent off for two weeks and then returned to the store after Easter. Customers pay $40 and a $10 deposit for the live animal, bedding, a heat lamp, water, and medicated food. There is no way of ensuring that these customers will have any idea how to care for the chicks, who must endure this instability and peril for the sake of novelty and entertainment.

The store, Steve’s Wonderful World of Pets, claims that this discourages people from buying “disposable pets.” However, the SPCA and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) do not agree. The CDC discourages young children, senior citizens, and anyone with a weakened immune system from handling live poultry due to health risks. The local SPCA has previously stopped this same store from dyeing these chicks various colors, which is illegal and cruel. The organization is sadly unable to put an end to the “Rent-a-Chick” promotion as a whole. This so-called “tradition” of Steve’s Wonderful World of Pets falls into a loophole of New York state law, which forbids selling, bartering, or giving away live chicks but does not specifically prohibit renting. The SPCA stated that the store “appears to value novelty and legal loopholes over animals’ lives.” Sign below to demand the end of this unacceptable practice.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Lane,

Your store’s long-held “tradition” of renting chicks to customers during the Easter season is irresponsible and dangerous. It puts the lives of innocent baby chicks in peril, as well as human health, according to the advice of the CDC.

The only reason this promotion has been allowed to continue thus far is a loophole of language in state law, which for good reason forbids selling, bartering, and giving away live chicks. This promotion is cruel—it deprives these chicks of any sort of stability, does not take into account that customers may not know how to care for them, and teaches children that animals are mere playthings. I urge you to stop renting live chicks at Steve’s Wonderful World of Pets.

Sincerely,

  2. These are living, breathing chicks! They are more than cute and need special care people cannot provide! Stop using them for a quick buck!

  3. Renting living, sentient beings out as merely chattel/objects is STILL egregious exploitation! NO “wonderful world” for THEM, Mr. Moron!

Just about every holiday now is so depressing, because one way or another animals are always going to be abused or killed for human consumption. It is awful and beyond words that people would put these little chicks threw this awful torture. Buy a freaking fruit basket taste good and is good or you. And nobody suffers.
