Don’t Allow For-Profit Companies to Oversee Animal Inspections

Target: Kevin Shea, Administrator of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services

Goal: Do not invite industry-friendly inspection companies to oversee the treatment of animals on farms, zoos and in laboratories.

The Trump administration is about to allow private companies to conduct inspections on farms and breeding facilities and in laboratories across the United States. This new change at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) could mean that companies that stand to profit from writing better reviews will be more likely to oversee animal treatment, meaning that incidences of abuse may go unreported. At a time when the USDA is already hiding inspection reports and blocking rules to prevent abuse, this is yet another step in the wrong direction.

Allowing for-profit companies to conduct inspections puts both animals and people at risk. Instead of having trained USDA inspectors ensure that animals are treated humanely and that food-borne illnesses are properly contained, industry-friendly groups are likely to step in, opening up the possibility for corruption and dangerous oversights. Instead of outsourcing this work, the USDA should be hiring more qualified personnel who can’t be bought off by factory farms, puppy mill breeders or roadside zoo managers.

This decision may give animal abusers a free pass, while posing a major public health risk to the rest of us. Sign below and speak out against this dangerous proposal from Trump’s Department of Agriculture.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Administrator Shea,

The USDA is currently considering a rule change that will allow farmers, laboratory researchers, animal breeders, zoo directors and more to hire their own inspectors for required animal welfare inspections. This proposition is dangerous and will put both animals and the general public at risk.

If this rule change is approved, what will stop puppy mill breeders or unethical factory farms from hiring out industry-friendly companies that are more likely to give them a pass? This also opens up the possibility for greater corruption and oversight during the inspection process.

For the sake of the animals, and for the public as a whole, we demand that you reject this proposal and instead hire more qualified USDA inspectors to continue the important work of ensuring that animal abuse does not go unpunished.

Sincerely,

Figures it would come from this AWFUL administration!!!

  5. Wendy Jenks says:

Talk about allowing the fox to oversee the henhouse. Will this administration stop at nothing to abuse animals? The USDA desperately needs an overhaul–105 inspectors cannot possibly handle the process of inspecting, citing, and following up on the tens of thousands of puppy mills, roadside zoos, circuses, farms, etc. that fall under their jurisdiction, but THIS is NOT the answer.

Here’s what YOU can do, if you truly love animals as you claim. Eliminate the need for these inspections in the first place:

    1. STOP buying animals when there are millions of loving, adoptable pets at rescues and shelters across the country.

    2. STOP going to circuses and roadside zoos. These animals do not deserve to be imprisoned and forced to do tricks and be gawked at by humans.

    3. STOP eating them! If you truly loved animals, you wouldn’t pay someone to kill them for you. Go vegan!

  6. “MAY go unreported”??? Of COURSE they will, and Trump knows it! He has proven himself to be nothing BUT wrong-wrong-wrong every time he turns around. America handed Trump the power to unleash his unbridled insanity upon their country and the whole world. Now he’s targeting the innocent nonhumans as “sitting ducks” for his twisted pathology. Then he can also claim he created more private sector jobs, while ignoring the country’s rapid sink into a pit of hell from which it may never escape. When trust is killed, there’s often NO reviving it.

Wake up America, before you become just as victimized as these poor nonhuman beings.

Yet another reason to hate trump. What else is he going to kill or destroy? How much is to much? I for one want to see this bastard impeached. Everyday there is anther reason to hate this scumbag. It seems to target animal welfare far to often.

This is an attempt by thebTrump administration to weaken any protections for animals. Do not let this happen. Get on the phones and let your representatives know that if they go along with this we will
Make sure they are not reelected.
