Investigate Aquarium Where One Third of All Animals Died in Under a Year

Target: Michael Gove, United Kingdom Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Goal: Close down Sea Life Centre aquarium and transfer all animals to accredited sanctuaries until a full investigation can take place.

A third of all animals died in under a year at a Sea Life Centre aquarium in Norfolk, England. Among the casualties were a number of endangered rays and sharks. We must demand justice for these marine creatures and insist that the aquarium be closed until a full investigation can take place.

According to new data, over 800 of the aquarium’s nearly 2300 animals died in less than a year. While representatives from Merlin Entertainment, the owners of Sea Life Centre, claim that the sobering statistics could be explained by a “water quality problem,” and the fact that the jellyfish they keep have a naturally high mortality rate, reports show that the Norfolk aquarium had far more deaths than other Sea Life Centre locations in the United Kingdom.

Far too often, fish and other aquatic creatures are treated as expendable commodities for human entertainment and profit. Sign the petition below to demand that this aquarium be shut down until these deaths are fully investigated.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Gove,

Over 800 animals died in under a year at a Sea Life Centre aquarium in Norfolk, representing roughly a third of the sharks, fish and other marine life held in the facility’s care. Such death rates are disturbing and warrant a full investigation into the potential causes so that conditions may be improved. If there is a water quality issue, as the owners allege, it must be resolved at once and all affected creatures transferred elsewhere before more animals perish.

Aquariums must not be allowed to put profits before the well-being of the creatures in their care. That is why we, the undersigned, demand that this facility be closed immediately and all possible causes of death investigated before allowing its doors to be opened once more.

Sincerely,

  1. Mr. Gove, This is completely unacceptable! Do your job, and handle ts horrible situation Now! A full investigation should take place immediately! 800 animals dying in the care of people who are supposedly responsible just doesn’t happen! This is clearly neglect, abuse, torture and murder! Please take immediate action!

  2. Karen Mckay says:

Look into this NOW!! Such a large number of animals died, clearly this shambles of a place has no clue how to care for them, close it down and send the surviving inhabitanta to somewhere that knows how tocare for them. beter still – LEAVE THEM WHERE THEY SHOULD BE!!!

  3. Institutions like this or nothing but animal abuse and more and more people are realizing this, please do the right thing!

  4. Derinda Nilsson says:

Animals do not belong in tanks, cages or any were else but were you found them in there natural habitat. this is so wrong on so many levels. PLEASE take action.
