Indonesia: Raise Animal Welfare Standards

Target: Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia

Goal: Raise animal welfare standards in Indonesia.

Video footage of an orangutan smoking a cigarette has sparked criticism of the Bandung Zoo in Indonesia, a zoo already infamous for its lack of supervision and education. In this video, a man flicks his cigarette into the animal’s cage, leading to laughter from crowds when the poor confused orangutan takes a puff; it is unknown whether the man was punished for his actions, but many blame the zoo itself for allowing this to happen.

Sadly, Bandung is far from the only zoo with such problems. Indonesia is known for its lack of animal welfare standards overall, leading to zoo animals living in substandard conditions and even being abused by the workers. An elephant was found dead with bruises on her body in 2016, and reviews of many Indonesian zoos are negative as they point out the horrid conditions and the overall poor state of the animals residing in them.

The problems with Bandung and other zoos are just one aspect of Indonesia’s poor animal welfare standards, however. In order to raise the standards for zoos, we must attack the problem at its root, and that means ensuring greater protection and safety for animals all over the country. Sign this petition to demand Indonesia take better care of its animal populations.

Dear President Widodo,

The Bandung Zoo has come under fire for video footage of an orangutan smoking a cigarette, highlighting the zoo’s lack of supervision for visitors and regard for the animals’ welfare. Not only is this problem all too common in Indonesian zoos, it is symptomatic of a greater lack of regard for the well-being of animals overall.

Indonesia has some of the lowest animal welfare standards on record, and this needs to change. The Bandung Zoo may hold the controversy spotlight at the moment, but it is only one symptom of a greater problem. In order to improve the condition of zoos, you must implement more laws for the protection and well-being of animals overall. Animals are living creatures just as we are, deserving of better living conditions and proper treatment, and this must be reflected in your laws.
