Release Bengal Tiger Cub to Sanctuary

Target: Lisa Peterson, Director, San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Goal: Send rescued and endangered Bengal tiger cub to live in freedom and safety at a sanctuary.

An endangered Bengal tiger cub was rescued after being illegally smuggled into the country, only to face a different kind of imprisonment. An 18-year-old California man was recently sentenced to prison for attempting to smuggle the cub, now named Moka, from Mexico. However, Moka may now be sentenced to a life of captivity as well, at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

Animals living in zoos often suffer from a condition referred to as “zoochosis,” which causes them to hurt themselves and exhibit other unusual behavior as a result of the stress of confinement. Tigers are extremely prone to this, because in captivity their natural habitats must be so severely limited or altered. Tigers in the wild live with minimal human contact and miles of space to roam, run, swim, or climb trees. Instead, Moka will be put on display for human entertainment and profit.

A sanctuary is a much more humane living option for a cub like Moka. His needs would be provided for—not only with food, protection, and veterinary care, but also the freedom to roam without being on public display. Sign below to demand that this tiger cub be released to a sanctuary.

Dear Director Peterson,

Moka the Bengal tiger cub deserves a life of freedom in which he is no longer made a spectacle by humans. This innocent endangered cub made news after being illegally smuggled into the U.S. The man responsible was sentenced to prison; Moka should not be faced with his own future of captivity.

A sanctuary is the safest and most humane home for this tiger cub. He will have protection, food, care, and the freedom to roam. This is Moka’s best chance at avoiding the stresses faced by zoo animals, living in confinement and put on display for profit—many of whom exhibit unusual and even self-harming or self-destructive behavior because of it. I urge you to give this tiger cub the best life possible for him, which means ensuring that the San Diego Zoo Safari Park releases him to a sanctuary.

  1. Hold this evil teen responsible for smuggling this innocent cub into the US & away from his mother. Instead of keeping him in a zoo he should be sent to a sanctuary where he can be properly taken care of. He does not deserve to be on public display & alone for the rest of his life. Man can be so evil that it is heart breaking.
