Stop Slaughtering 3,000 Birds Every Day in Iran Wetland

Target: Masoumeh Ebtekar, Chief of Iran’s Department of Environment

Goal: End slaughter of a million birds a year in Iran’s wetlands.

The Fereydunkenar International Wetland in Iran homes millions of birds every winter, but nearly 3,000 of them are killed illegally every day. Located in the Southern Caspian Sea, it holds three lagoons and a rich ecosystem which provides birds a place to rest for the winter. Of these millions of birds, there are many endangered/threatened species who require protection from local and visiting hunters.

The most vivid example of a species affected by illegal hunting is the Eastern Siberian crane, which has just one known existing member. This individual visits the wetland in Iran, and is in danger of being killed every time. It is estimated that one million birds are killed every year at this location alone, which is about half of the total number of birds that visit every winter. Thanks to a new transparent net that the birds cannot see, hunters are able to catch up to a dozen every time. Although hunters kill the birds mainly for food to sell at the market, there are those who kill to add to their taxidermy collections.

Regardless of intent, these killings are illegal and detrimental to the ecosystem. Zoologists and conservationists warn that if continued, the endangered species could become extinct, which would have repercussions across the entire ecosystem. The Iranian community has a positive history with the environment. When the Asiatic cheetahs were endangered because of poaching, several approaches including educating the community, raising awareness about the cheetah’s importance, and holding workshops all worked to reduce cheetah mortality.

In this case, Iran’s department of environment is met with resistance by armed locals when widlife rangers attempt to enforce hunting laws. However, the department can devise new plans and programs to help stop bird slaughter at this wetland. If it does not act soon, these birds could become extinct. Sign the petition below to urge Iran’s Department of Environment Chief Masoumeh Ebtekar to help prevent the slaughter of these endangered birds.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Ebtekar,

The Fereydunkenar International Wetland in your country is home to millions of birds every winter, but unfortunately, 3,000 of them are killed illegally every day. Local and visiting hunters alike kill them for food and taxidermy without regard to their endangered/threatened status. If not stopped, these birds will become extinct, and the whole ecosystem will suffer.

In the past, local communities in Iran helped reduce the Asiatic cheetah’s mortality by helping stop poaching. By distributing literature highlighting the cheetah’s value, developing educational programs, and holding workshops, the Department of the Environment engaged with the public successfully to achieve a goal. I urge you to address the slaughter at the Fereydunkenar wetland, and help prevent many bird populations from becoming extinct.

Locals are resisting because killing birds provide them with food and trophies, but I believe the Department of the Environment can work with the public to stop this slaughter. I hope that you take the necessary actions to help ensure that this ecosystem and its inhabitants prosper.

Sincerely,
