United States: Help Preserve Antarctica’s Penguin Population

Target: Jim Kurth, Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Save Antarctica’s king penguins from extinction.

Antarctica’s king penguin population is shrinking day by day and could completely disappear by the century’s end. Climate change is not only killing off the krill population (the birds’ main food source), but slowly melting the arctic and destroying the birds’ breeding grounds, giving them little to no chance to repopulate the species before it is too late.

We cannot let this species disappear. The ecosystem of Antarctica is particularly delicate. The loss of even a single species could spell disaster for the continent’s future. This holds especially true for the king penguin. According to extensive research, the birds are the “key species for understanding and predicting impacts of global change on the marine biome.” There are islands where the remainder of the species can retreat to, but conditions are harsh and the competition for breeding space and food could further damage their numbers.

Right now, environmental groups and scientists are pushing for a large marine protection area in the Antarctic and the United States must support them and demand stronger protection overall for the continent’s environment. Sign this petition to help protect what remains of the king penguin population and their chances to rebuild.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Kurth,

The king penguin population of Antarctica is dying out little by little and could disappear by the end of the century due to climate change killing off their food supply and destroying their breeding grounds. These birds are vital to the understanding and predicting of impacts of global change, according to extensive research, and are part of an extremely delicate ecosystem in which the loss of even a single species could spell disaster down the line.

Scientists and environmental groups are pushing to create a large environmental protection area in the Antarctic and the United States must support them in every way we can. We must fund the conservation efforts and aid in the prevention of climate change, as well as demand stronger protection laws for the king penguin. Throw all of your support into this endeavor so that this species can have a fighting chance.

Sincerely,

We are begging you to save Penguins from extinction. PLEASE!!!

  3. If only the HUMAN RACE, rather than these rapidly-growing numbers of other, vital and NOT destructive earth species who are threatened with extirpation, could go extinct INSTEAD! THAT would make for a beautiful world once more! But mankind is the dumbest species this world has unfortunately ever known…

  4. Remember the old adage, “the extinction of one is the extinction of the other.” Please lets do the right thing!
