Stop the Illegal Trade of Endangered Live Eels

Target: Anissa SY Wong, JP, Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Hong Kong

Goal: End the illegal trade, farming, and consumption of endangered live eels.

Hong Kong serves as a hub for the illegal trade of endangered live Japanese eels. Hundreds of thousands of live eels are traded in Hong Kong to countries throughout Asia.

Live eels are traded as babies. They’re shipped to other nations, like Japan and South Korea, where they are illegally farmed and, later, consumed. The trade of live eels is outlawed in many Asian nations, including Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. However, a loophole has allowed this practice to continue in Hong Kong.

The Japanese eel has been endangered since 2010. Hong Kong must do something to protect this species before it disappears forever. Sign the petition to demand that the trading, harvesting, and consumption of these endangered eels be brought to an end.

Dear Secretary Wong,

Illegal trade of the endangered Japanese eel still runs rampant in your nation. Baby eels are being farmed solely for consumption, as their numbers continue to dwindle and decline.

Trade and farming of these eels is stringently enforced in your neighboring countries, including Japan and South Korea. However, you allow this trade to continue. You’ve recently taken the extraordinary steps to end the ivory trade in your country. I urge you to do the same with the eel trade.

  1. Remember the old adage, “the extinction of one is the extinction of the other.” With so manys species in peril, it will only be a matter of time for the eels to become extinct and maybe even one day, humans if we keep up this cruelty. Additionally, no animal should have to suffer in any way. It’s the right thing to do!

You mean to tell me you people can’t find anything better to eat. This is sick.
